New Avast - Still Lunarsoft's Recommended Anti-Virus?

Is the new Avast Free/Home Edition still the recommended anti-virus? I ask as when you Compare products, Lets you safely browse suspicious websites or applications, isn't ticked; http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download#tab3

But I thought that was the whole point of having a real-time anti-virus, that si it stops viruses getting into your system from any area.

And whats the take on it having a real-time anti-spyware included? Is it good? If so, is there any need to have Windows Defender running?

Whilst I'm here, am I right in saying that when installing Comodo, it should be firewall only, and no anti-virus? Then anti-virus should be Avast. I'd like to think as mentioned above that Avats would take care of both viruses and spyware.

Cheers.

OSAM: Autorun Manager v5.0 - against rookits that hide their files!

OSAM: Autorun Manager v5.0 - against rookits that hide their files!
11-Sep-2009

As mentioned before, a few weeks ago we recommenced the works on our first public product, namely OSAM: Online Solutions Autorun Manager.

Releasing this, fifth, version of the product has turned hard for our company. For a number of reasons of different nature the release data had to be moved several times. However, we managed to brace up and - thanks to join efforts - finally released the new version of the product.

Now, greet OSAM: Online Solutions Autorun Manager v5.0!

The 5th version provides a unique possibility to detect and remove rootkits that hide their files on the hard disk. Hiding registry keys and files rootkit techniques are spreading wider and wider, so our company had nothing to do but invent and implement a solution for detecting and removing such malware. And we did it! OSAM applies algorithms that parse and the structure of file systems on hard disks without involving any mechanisms of the operating system and thus detects and removes almost all the known viruses and other types of malware.

Presently OSAM detects hidden files, in addition to detecting hidden registry entries, which allows for using it in detecting and removing newest and up-to-date viruses.

http://www.online-solutions.ru/common/images/osam/conficker_removal_250.jpg

One-click removal of the Conficker (Downadup) worm using OSAM

For a long time, our malware analysts have requested on improvements in processing of Windows .job files. Good news - version v5.0 features a fundamentally modified and improved the information retrieval method. This modification has significantly simplified detection and removal of viruses, improved and accelerated the procedure of adding information to malware databases.

Due to high popularity of our product among Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, a set of considerable improvements have been introduced into support of these operating systems.

Besides, we have reworked a large number of scanning techniques and data processing algorithms, fixed the known bugs, and implemented several helpful functions (please, refer to the complete list of updates).

We are sure that you will like the new version of OSAM: Online Solutions Autorun Manager as it will help you always keep your computer safe and sound!

We are glad to once again express our thanks to Julia (JM) for her patience, devotion to the company, and confidence of success! Hold on!

We are also glad to inform all users of OSSS: Security Suite, that besides the OSAM version 5 release, during the recent four weeks we have worked hard on the client-server interaction. This work has been very fruitful and resulted in serious improvements in the functionality, which we hope to present in a new version of the product, due in the near future.

Have I been bitten

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place - move the post if you see fit.

OK, I don't know exactly what happened and I didn't notice anything wrong until last Saturday. I came home late, my PC was off,
I fired it up and updated Avast free, Malwarebytes free, Spyware Terminator free. I ran PerfectDisk 10 on 2 partitions using
Smart Placement - rebooted.

I then went to amd.com and attempted to download a pdf file, when I tried to save it to my downloads folder I was presented with
a warning - read-only location and the file was saved with zero bytes. I checked the folder and sure enough it was read only. I
attempted to uncheck read-only in properties, applied but no luck - it is once again read-only - newly created folders the same.

Long story short ALL my folders (as far as I can tell not any files) are read-only, 4 partitions on 2 accounts, both admin, and I can't
remove the read-only properties to save my life. One strange thing happened (only once), when I unchecked read-only on a folder and
clicked apply - the hidden files and folders appeared - only once, but this doesn't sound good.

The only software I installed has been the latest portable stuff from the source, Filezilla, Notepad++, CCleaner. I forgot, I also ran
CCleaner with the modest settings recommended - no registry edits just crap cleaning.

I must admit I only use ZoneAlarm Pro while online, and I think this might very well be my first virus.

I spent Sunday and Monday, maybe 12 hours total running all that I knew and had (above apps) and McAfee Avert Stinger, f-secure
BlackLight, MS MRT v3.1 (full scan 4 hrs), Trend Micro's Sysclean - nothing found. I did want to run a few online scans but I decided
not to when the files were anywhere from 10 to 15 megs (I'm on dialup) and I figured the download would get foobared should I get
disconnected.

I am clueless when it comes to the advanced features of Windows XP Pro and would like to know where to look for such system wide
settings - security policy or wherever.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, I apologize in advance should the condition affect my internet connection and I can't respond right away.

How to run MSRT the simplest way possible

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (or MSRT) is a small on-demand scanner that checks your computer for some specific infections. The little program is not at all a replacement for your regular anti-virus program but can detect and remove some very bothersome malware.

The latest version of the MSRT is downloaded every second Tuesday every month to your computer via the regular Microsoft Updates but then it kind of disappears from your view. So, the question is how do you run the MSRT the simplest way possible?

The solution is:
Hit 'Start'
Hit 'Run'
Type mrt /f (just copy and paste)
