I've experienced slow performance with Internet Explorer 8.
Internet Explorer 8 is more standards-compliant than Internet Explorer 7 though, which is a good thing.

I don't think Internet Explorer is a good browser. Not even a decent browser.

I would recommend Mozilla Firefox.

Well, to each his/her own. I prefer firefox as well, but IE8 behaving that badly is most definitely some sort of add-on or plug-in (I've seen it many times myself). See if the same problems reproduce running IE8 in no-addons mode (iexplore.exe -extoff) in Safe Mode w/Networking (if you can). If it doesn't, it's not IE8 but an add-in.

Getting rid of the Spyware/Adware (atlas dmt) and the Trojan (Switch dialer) is a better idea than going back to IE7.

Really, IE7 is not more secure than IE8, more likely less. Figure out what's wrong with your security set-up that allowed the malware to infect your machine.

I also use Firefox, by the way, with the NoScript extension (which blocks most exploits).
Your proposition may be good
But let’s have one thing understood --
Whatever it is, I’m against it!
And even when you’ve changed it or condensed it,
I’m against it.
- Sung by Groucho Marx in Horse Feathers (1932). Currently a popular political philosophy.
