So I got to see Godzilla yesterday in theaters. I really liked it a LOT. But I'm also a Godzilla fan. I wrote up my thoughts of what they could have improved on after seeing the movie. Far, far better than that abomination known as Godzilla (Zilla, 1998)

--- Caution: This post may contain spoilers. But the spoilers will be marked as such. ---

Considering that they didn't use Suitimation (how the Toho series Godzilla movies are done) they still did a nice job overall.

The nods to Godzilla were awesome. Dr. Serizawa, for example. They did a great job with his roar as well. Though they should have had it in there a bit more, and clearer too.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the movie lacked key Godzilla elements.

  • Godzilla's signature dorsal fins lighting up blue and his radioactive blue ray was there. The problem? It was a narrow ray instead of taking up his entire mouth like the Toho series. Also, his spines started lighting up at the tail. That just did not make sense. The ray may have been a copyright issue?

  • Since Legendary made this Godzilla, it was a bit like the fights in Pacific Rim. That is, the fight sequences were not very clear. Dust, smoke, debris and things like that obscure the view of the monsters. Why is this bad? I went to see Godzilla. To SEE Godzilla and enjoy the monsters fighting. Which leads to my next point...

  • The overall screen time for Godzilla felt like it was 15 minutes or less. The movie itself is said to run for 2 hours and 6 minutes. What gives with giving your KEY ATTRACTION such little screen time? (Note: I'm omitting the time where all you see are his dorsal fins. Even then it wasn't much.)

  • It didn't feel like Godzilla was the main character.

Instead, some guy named Ford Brody seemed to be the main focus. This isn't really what Godzilla movies are about Legendary. The storylines for Godzilla usually are not the key focus. They have more focus on what Godzilla is doing and why. The focus revolved too much around Ford, the nuke, and the human's trying to deal with the MUTOs and Godzilla.

  • The lack of the always classic Godzilla theme. How can you have Godzilla yet not have the Godzilla theme? For anyone who wants to know what I'm referring to:

  • Their attempts to kill Godzilla back in 1954 were... a bit odd at the start of the movie. It seemed rather odd considering the history of Godzilla. It just doesn't quite feel like it fit with the rest of the movie.

  • One part of the movie makes it look like Godzilla is gravely injured or perhaps killed. A building lands on him. Big deal. That and worse has happened and he easily brushed it off. So why take him down like this? Injured I can understand, but knowing what Godzilla is capable of (Regeneration/Regenerator-G, how he basically heals and cannot die) this felt like a rather weak part of the overall movie.

  • Near the end,

when you finally get to see Godzilla clearly as he leaves San Francisco; his arms are just hanging a bit. Now, Godzilla is based on a T-Rex, a Stegosaurus and an alligator. In every Godzilla movie his arms are more outwards like a Rex, not dangling.

  • Godzilla making eye contact was just really weird and completely out of place. That just... I don't even know what to think.

  • Godzilla's feet looked really weird too, like... not right at all...

I may add more to this later.
