  1. It was loaded with 7.10, had no problems with recognising the wireless adaptor card. I upgraded to 8.04 and it wouldn't recognise the card. I loaned it out and the guy tried to get it working instead of a cable connection. Messed it up, so I tried to reload.

I think I just might wait until 8.10 is released and get the CD.

    Thanks!!

  2. I posted this on the Ubuntu forums about 2 weeks ago and never got a response.

This is a Dell latitude C840 laptop. It is one of my loaner laptops and really need to get it loaded.

I have 2 7.10 install disks, the hdd has been completely wiped and formatted twice, get the same results.

I had to reinstall 7.10. Installation gets just past the screens of file checking and the screen gets short horizontal lines with a small garbled box in the top left corner. The install stops there.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks!

  3. Hey all, I have both 2003 Pro. Enterprise and 2007 Pro Plus disk sets. They are volume licensed for students and faculty.

    My question is:

Does anyone know how many PC's they are allowed to be installed on?

The version of office XP Por that I have I've installed on several PC's, no complaining from either Microsoft or Office.

    Thanks!

  4. Hi woodbutcher.

You have a lot of programs starting with your computer. Do you really need all of those at startup? A majority of those can be safely removed.

Your log is clean, though you may want to get rid of Norton's product. You may also be able to get a refund as well, should you need the support number to call and tell Norton how much their products are worthless; I believe we can find it for you.

That is wierd, this is a buisness comp, and was hit with a download trojan. I takes atleast 5 min for it to shut-down on it's own, among other wierd stuff. Any ideas?

As for Norton, the subscription will be up in a couple of months anyway. I'm thinking of replacing it with either NOD32 or Kaspersky's anti-virus.

  6. Sorry, woodbutcher. It's just seems silly to have a computer with so much... superficial plastic bling. hahah...

And Lian Li cases... ooooo.... too bad their models go for 10 times the cost of my case.

Well, I got ya on that one-- other than the window and the door, the rest is steel, NOT aluminum.

I agree on the cost, concidering that that case was about $60 USD new.(I get discounts)

  7. I tried using the cd uninstaller this time and it keeps bringing up the same error.

This is what I do when the same thing happens:

Wrtie down the program name and manufacturer (such as Symantec and Norton)

Open regedit, and do a search for all of the occurences of the program, delete the keys.

Then go to program files and delete the folders, reboot, re-search the registry.

  8. My hard drive, if you would believe, is actually the most audible part of my computer... the power supply fans are decent, and I have a large aluminum heatsink so I can turn my CPU fan's RPM much lower... but my HDD has a very audible whine.

The next after that is power supply - do you use a silent PSU?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Alot of the newer good PS's are pretty quiet, I'd sugges checking the manufacurers website for the specs. Look for the dB number--lower is better.

Sounds like you have a Seagate HDD, they always have had a whine.

  9. I build systems and over-clock constantly.

One thing I have learned is DO NOT play with the voltages with these newer processors! The correct voltage, to with-in 1/10 of a volt is critical!! Some it is 1/100 of a volt!!

Most systems will let you play with the multipliers and the speed.

If you overclock, remember play with the speed first, and try not to go over 1% at a time. If it's stable go more, but don't go over 5% and 8% on the multiplier.

That can be a very costly mistake, especially with the new dual-core processors!!

  10. I've build way too many PC's and have 4 of my own, the ONLY HDD I will even consider is Maxtor. I have only had 1 out of probably 500 go bad and it was bad from the factory.

I hope that Seagate will maintain the Maxtor quality!!

  11. Sometimes if the scan is on, and Outlook is working; system resource usage will make a large jump up, especially CPU cycles and memory usage.

That is a flaw in Outlook that alot of people don't like about it.

If you turn off the scan going in and out, it will speed up dramatically.
