    external dvd rw

    Ok, i have an opportunity to purchase an external dvd burner-still in box, never used for 40 bucks (canadian). Made by comstar, 2.0 usb dvd+/-rw double format (+/-), dual layer (8.5gb) dvd-rom 12x max cd-rom 32x max dvd+r 2.4x dvd+r 8x dvd+rw 4x dvd-r 8x dvd-rw 4x cd-r 24x cd-rw 16x 8x what do you think, should i get it? Its not hot, and not faulty.
  2. so it is run and then it automatically gives you the headers explaining them and if they are safe to remove? thats what i am getting out of it.
  3. What exactly does your "HijackThis Converter v0.43 Beta" do?
  4. Tarun what is that program you post with for log cleaning? :w00t:
  5. I bought my computer 4 years ago, and am looking to build one in the next year or two, so am starting to do research on what exactly I need, and what is good. I want to be able to play some higher end games, i do lots of word processing, use publisher, store a lot of music and movies and want to be able to burn them onto disks. I also want to hitch the pc to my tv to watch stuff on it-which i currently cant do. I currently have a web camera and headset, printer, the speaker system, a lower end sound card, and an external harddrive (wd-7200 rpm, 250gb.). I am torn between keeping this computer as a second to practice loading, uninstalling, formatting, and various programs, etc. without getting the other one "dirty", and canabalizing this one for parts to save on cash. If I canabalize, i will keep the external (which I will keep external), sound card, speakers, web cam and headset, and can use the keyboard, mouse and monitor, and printer. I also have a 40 gb hard drive in the current system, but its so small, i dont know if it is even worth it to keep in my new system. I plan to spend about 3000 dollars Canadian (thats about 85 cents to the american dollar) so about the equivalent of 2500 american. Here is what I have established: I want a gb of ram. I need to know what is a high end type of ram, and what do you suggest for the fastest speed possible. If i canabalize, can i use the existing ram in a new system? I currently have a 256, and a 512 stick-PC2100 DDR SDRAM, gold alloy(I dont know what that all means). I can use this monitor, or get a new one, its not a huge issue. If I do purchase another one, should I get a flat/thin screen or not? I want to put two 250 hard drives in it-I need lots of room. What brand and what is the fastest type that you think I should purchase. I have need a case that will hold more stuff in it. Mine is currently too small and i need room for more stuff. dvd burner-i will need one, and dont know what types are good. what speed am i looking for for fast and reliable burning? As well, should I invest in an external one, and then use my current dvd player as my regular player to save on wear and tear on the burner? I am looking for a processor speed that will not need to be upgraded for a long time. I currently have a 2000 mhz (planar clock speed 400mhz) intel p4- but i see 3 and up processors. I believe that by the time i am ready, the 4000 mhz will be more affordable. Should I go with Pentium or AMD? I currently use a p4 and am happy, but most people i know use AMD. I am not brand loyal and up to trying something different. Suggestions? Graphics card. I currently have a nvidia geforce4 mx 420 (64mb)-very low end from what i understand. I would like to get a higher end (but not necessarily top of the line) card. What would be good? As well, should I get one with a tv tuner built in or not? I understand this will be an expensive item. TV hitch up. What all do I need to connect PC to tv? I want to watch movies an stuff on the tv. Motherboard. Hear the term, dont know the full story. What would I be looking for, and rough cost estimate. Upgradable? Cooling system. Suggestions? I dont even know what i have in mine now, but it has one fan and never feels hot. can i reuse the current floppy drive? should i bother? What else is involved, and what do i need? Synopsis. I want speed. Lots of it. 2500 american to spend. I can build completely new, or canabalize-which i assume will get me a better system. Which do you suggest? You guys rock. Oh, and space in my house is not an issue. As well, the computer is in a cool, dry place if that matters.

    Increase in Ram

Will I notice a difference in my computer if I upgrade from 768 Ram to 1024? That is the most Ram I can put in my computer. Thank you for your anticipated response.

    PDF Reader

Hello, I am looking for a PDF reader-something that will automatically read a PDF when I click on it. I want the least bloated and most simple download that wont slow down my computer. Any suggestions and a link for a freeware version? I dont need anything fancy, just a simple reader. Thanks!
  13. thats a great question. i only use IE. I will switch to firefox for today and see what happens. Well, I tried virtually everything I could think of. I finally had a buddy come over and he reformated my computer. Got rid of all the junk and it now runs real smooth and fast. Thanks for all the help everyone. :D
  14. Is there such a thing as a self help kind of tutorial to teach people to read their own logs? I would love to learn to read them. Would it be a lot of time to learn? House, work, kids, all kind of bite into the extra computing time. Maybe online courses with support forums? Just some thoughts I was kicking around in my noggin. :D

  18. as i was going to another site things froze again and i had to go to standby mode and back to get it working again. Arrrrrghghgh! things seem to be a bit faster though. :D
  19. alrighty! i did what you said and a thing popped up saying it couldnt find 'del'. I removed that word and retyped the rest of the line and up popped an avg window saying a virus was in the file. i deleted it (as it gave me that option). any idea what that thing was? i have to wait awhile to see if that was my problem or just something else. will keep you updated. and thank you for all of your help. :)
  20. Ok, here is the deal. I ran trend micro anti virus-no problem, and avg-no problem, and then symantec found : C:\WINDOWS\tqp.exe. I also reran everything and it all looks clean. 21. Wow that was fast! LOL! I ran all of the anti malware package. Microsoft anti spyware, spywareblaster, spywareguard, avg, spybot, adaware, cwshredder, ccleaner, cleanup!, diskcleaner, diskdefragmenter. everything is up to date, and my windows xp is a legitimate version with sp2 and i always upgrade all of my programs.
  22. Well, I hit the link you gave me and there was a download link. I downloaded it and saved it to disk. I read the instructions, and basically I understood (hopefully correctly) to turn off computer, put disk (floppy) in A drive and then turn computer on. It then "booted" the disk and started running the tests automatically. It ran 6 tests and then started again. The instructions state that if it doesnt find anything the first run through, it wont find anything, and I can either turn computer off or press X to stop test. Since it didnt find anything, I turned the computer off, and here I am. Problem persists. Did I do everything correctly? Hey, did you change the name of my thread, and did you delete some stuff from the first post? Not that i care, as i kind of assumed that i didnt get a response because i didnt follow the hijackthislog instructions and posted the wrong thread name. :( We live and learn. :D

    Avatars

Hello all, How does one go about getting an avatar on a forum site? Is there a freeware site that has them to choose from? And how do they get from a site or my computer to the forum? I am completely in the dark here so a very basic step by step answer would be appreciated. THANK YOU!
  24. Hi Tarun, I ran (after finally figuring it all out ) the windows memory diagnostics a couple of times and it didnt find any problems. Any other suggestions? And is there anything I can remove from my log to make things faster and more efficient? As well (sorry for all the questions), when i start my computer quicktime and Microsoft anti spyware both load, but they arent in my startup list (msconfig thing that i check). Why would that be? Thank you. sorry, I should have read the heading and posted this as: Lordoftheweb HijackThislog - 01. Oh, the link on the announcement part of hijackthislogs is page not found.
  25. Hello, My computer screen freezes in the middle of applications fairly often. I use zonealarm, avg antivirus, spywareguard, spywareblaster, spybot, ad-aware, and keep them all up to date and run them at least once a week. I also defrag, and use ccleaner and Cleanup! to keep things smooth. I have also cleaned the registry since this started, but it didnt help. I have a Pentium 4, 2000 mhz, 40g hard drive, 250g external hard drive, 768 ram, and the computer has been doing this for about a month or so. The computer is 4 years old. For whatever reason, when i hit the power button manually on the computer and shut it (the computer) down, but not all the way (i dont hold the button down, just press it quickly once-I believe its called "stand by mode") the computer goes into "hibernation mode" and then i press it again, and it comes back on and works fine again. I have cleaned out the inside carefully for dust, and it is in a cool place. i have also run all anti spyware and antivirus programs before this post. Any help with this problem would be appreciated. Thank you.
