  3. nice!

i didn't think i would have so much java junk left over from the last uninstall when i upgraded to a newer version on my vista machine.

  4. There, a good system that can be tweaked to the max without spending ALL your money on it :D . This system can be made under 1000USD + tax and shipping. The CPU will go over 3GHz, the RAM over 1GHz and the VGA card can be tweaked about 20% more. Forget about SLI or Crossfire please.

Holycow! that has me all excited to build a desktop.

  5. ahh! i misread and didn't understand your question correctly. the best possible security is you. knowing what you download and staying away from bad sites is the best possible way to maintain a good and clean OS. i wish there was an all in one security application that has it all and be effective. currently i have my router firewall, Comodo Pro firewall, Avir AntiVirus, and Windows Defender. to have one single program that does everything would be great.

  6. first thoughts when i read your question is that we are pretty much always bombarded with having safe internet practices such as don't open email's that have attachments form unknown names or sources, don't visit porn sites etc. etc. the emphasis has been if you have a good layered security system that includes firewalls, anti-spam, anti-virus, and the like, the OS will stay healthy. you can visit literally a hundred different forums and you will find most will have a greater emphasis on security related topics rather then topics on how to maintain a healthy OS. when a forum is found specifically for a OS most of the subject matter will be how to fix something that is broken or tweaks/hacks on the OS but hardly anything on how to maintain that healthy OS.

  7. you may have this story confused with Jammie Thomas was who ordered to pay $220,000 to the big record companies a few months ago. That's $9,250 for each of 24 songs she was accused of sharing online. apparently the above law suit is based on this...

"The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

"I couldn't believe it when I read that," says Ray Beckerman, a New York lawyer who represents six clients who have been sued by the RIAA. "The basic principle in the law is that you have to distribute actual physical copies to be guilty of violating copyright. But recently, the industry has been going around saying that even a personal copy on your computer is a violation."

  8. The Recording Industry a**. of America (RIAA) has began a legal spat with a man who copied CDs he had bought onto his computer.

Jeffery Howell of Scottsdale, Arizon has taken his case to court after he received a letter from the RIAA, reports the Washington Post.

The RIAA, which lobbies on behalf of a music industry hammered by tumbling sales as fans increasingly turn to free downloads and file sharing for their listening pleasure, insists that it is illegal for someone who has legally bought a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

And, it seems that Howell is the latest individual the RIAA has singled out for special treatment in its legal pantomime.

RIAA lawyer Ira Schwartz argued in a lawsuit brief filed earlier this month that the 2,000 or so MP3 files Howell created were "unauthorised copies" of copyrighted music.

So far it is unclear as to how and why Howell was targeted by the RIAA. There doesn't seem to be any suggestion that the MP3s were made available to all comers.

On its website the RIAA states: "If you make unauthorised copies of copyrighted music recordings, you're stealing. You're breaking the law and you could be held legally liable for thousands of dollars in damages."........

  9. just wondering what everyone has and how much you like it. as for me, i have the Sandisk Sansa e280R and i love it. i guess originally i was interested in the iPOD cuz basically just about everyone has em. after some research i decided that i didn't want to be restricted to iTUNES so i ended up with the Sansa. i also use MediaMonkey to manage my music library and to convert my music to MP3 and FLAC formats. good stuff.

  10. originally i was going to do a clean install of Vista in order to get rid of the excess and unwanted programs that came pre-installed. but i was told that the restore disc's from HP will only put everything back as they were, so i'll have to remove things manually. more time consuming but oh-well. already i see quite a few things to remove.
