[Packages]

NT4VU is now seperated into different packages. This means that you can choose to an extent what stuff you want which means the size should be smaller. The base package uses the NSIS installer present in previous versions, the other packages are zip archives which need to be extracted into the resources folder. For NT4 Workstation you need to choose either the standard shell which is the default shell or the shell update which comes with IE4. I have not made a shell update package for NT4 Server because I do not believe this necessary.

NT4VU3_B2_Base: The base package needed by everyone.

NT4VU3B2_IE6: Needed if you have installed IE6.

NT4VU3B2_Server: Needed if you have installed Windows NT4 Server.

NT4VU3B2_Workstation: Needed if you have installed Windows NT4 Workstation.

NT4VU3B2_Workstation_Shell-Update: Needed if you have installed the Shell Update on Windows NT4 Workstation.

NT4VU3B2_Workstation_Standared-Shell: Needed if you have not installed the Shell Update on Windows NT4 Workstation.

Hi, I use Windows NT with the Windows Desktop Update (WDU) and it seems that nt4vu2rc1 is not compatible with it. Windows Desktop Update integrates Internet Explorer with Windows and enable futures as 256 colour icons, address field in My Computer, etc.

WDU is already in Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, but not in 95/NT. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Desktop_Update. You install WDU when you install IE4. If you want to install it with IE6:

1. Start the Internet Explorer 6 installation program and open the file: '%TEMP%\ixp000.tmp\iesetup.cif' in notepad. (You must stay in the Licence question menu.)

2. Look after the '[iE4Shell_NTx86]' headline.

3. About 6 lines under, you'll see 'UIVISIBLE=0'.

4. Change it to 'UIVISIBLE=1'.

5. Save the iesetup.cif file.

6. In the setup menu, accept the agreement and click next.

7. Choose "Install Minimal, or customise your browser".

8. Mark "Windows Desktop Update" and continue the installation.

My system:

Windows NT Service Pack 6a, swedish

Intenret Explorer 6.0 SP1, swedish

3.2 GHz CPU

1024 DDR2

2x 189GB SATA HDD:s

Nvidia Gforce FX 5500

Will NT Visual Update be able to run with WDU?

dave.

I run Windows XP in Virtual PC 5.1, so I don't need to upgrade to a newer version. Windows NT has never chrashed for me and almost no spyware and virus are compatible with it. You can run almost all software on it (if they are from 2003 or earlier) and no 3D games. I run those games in VPC..

hmm i forgot about the shell update, no nt4vu isnt currently compatable with it you could install everything else though. the problem is that i copy explorer.exe and shell32.dll rather then patch because i had problems and explorer includes the 256 colour systray fix.

and also i cant seem to patch in new bitmaps with my method.

what you could do is edit the bat file to remove the lines which copy shell32.dll and explorer.exe hmm but then you miss much of the icons.

maybe i should include support for shell update in nt4vu2.1

New Release: NT4VU3 Alpha 1

[New Features of NT4VU3 Alpha 1]

-Damian666's filepatcher is used for the installer which means no batch files

and at the is point in time will be used for all future releases.

This means i no longer copy files such as shell32.dll which means that

windows updates can be applied without problem. (even if there arent that many)

This also means there is a more reliable backup and uninstall because they

arent affected by me making mistakes in batch files like before

Also there is an option to install welcome centre after install.

You will have to restart after you have installed NT4VU3A1

-Icon error caused by the reg files has been fixed I think.

[issues in NT4VU3 Alpha 1]

-Sysdm.cpl has not been patched because im not sure how to apply Marxo's sysdm.cpl.

-Newer logon screensaver is not included because im not sure how to apply it.

-There might be some minor error messages in the installer,

but i havent found any that effect how it functions.

-REGEDIT.EXE isnt patched because it is read only by default,

if it is not readonly it should be patched.

-Shell Update is not supported in this release.

-256 Colour Systray fix has not been applied.

[system Requirements]

Windows NT4 Workstaion

Service Pack 6

Internet Explorer 6 (Not required)

(OE6 for OE stuff and wmp7.0 and or wmp6.4 for wmp stuff)

A computer capable of Running Windows NT4

Video card capable of 16bit Colour for icons

Video card capable of 24bit Colour may be required for some bmps

(Shell Update is not supported in this release)

Good job. NT4 never looked that good.

But it was released in 1996, over a decade ago.

I wonder how many people are still using it.

Perhaps, its time to let it go?

Maybe make a visual update for Windows 2000 (NT5) ?

I wish I had a copy of NT4 and Windows 2000. It would help me when I test in VMs (and I tend to test these GUI enhancements and other things too).
