Applied DAF, now loads of Event Errors

Hello,

I was having problems using Windows Update.

At the site, the screen read:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

I did this, the files were downloaded, registered, but I kept being taken back to the initial "Register or reinstall the files..." page.

Heard about DAF (v0.60.0.24) so I downloaded and ran it.

I did the following in DAF:

* #3: WU/WUAU: Fix Windows Update with all options checked (did not "FlushSoftwareDistribution")

* #5: Ran with only the default "Programming Cores/Runtimes" checked.

* A problem with one of the dlls was encountered (I forget which -- should have wrote it down).

it was suggested to run "Repair Permissions" under "Tools" so I did.

After all this, I returned to the Windows Update center. The normal update screen was there, so I ran then updated the recommended files.

I thought all was well since DAF appeared to have everything fixed.

However, upon rebooting, it took forever in the Windows logon screen to get past the "Network Settings".

I looked in the Event Viewer and saw a whole slew of errors:

After all these errors, I again went to Windows Update but was encountered with the now familiar "Register or reinstall the files for me..." screen.

I figured "what the heck" so I reregistered again, but after was taken to a "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." (they didn't).

In addition, the connection I configured under "Network and Dial-up Connections" is no longer there; nor is there even a "Make New Connection" Icon there any longer.

Further, I should add that "Internet Explorer" is not in my "Add/Remove Programs" of the control panel.

However, it had disappeared before I ran DAF.

On my own, I tried ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew to no avail.

Here is my config:

Ah, Windows 2000. This is a bug that probably won't get fixed by MS.

The gist: svchost entries are missing and need to be re-applied. Windows Update will probably work after merging the .reg listed on the "Superfail part 2" link at the top of that article and rebooting. Anyway, those three "Superfail" articles are all I know about this.

That Superfail II did the trick! Windows updates now work, my Network icons are present and working once again, and I don't know why, but my mouse is not freaking out like it was.

The only thing I have to figure out is why my IE Explorer isn't showing in the Add/Remove section.

As I said in my earlier post tho, it wasn't working prior to my using DAF, so its something else.

I don't remember Internet Explorer 6 ever showing up in Add/Remove... it's IE 7 that does this, and you can't get IE 7 for Windows 2000 (isn't that correct? I forget...)

Maybe IE 6 never did show in Add/Remove...not sure now :-/

I may have been trying to find clues as to why my system was messed up, and just assumed IE 6 should have been there.

Can't get IE 7 for Windows 2000.

I think its about time I move up to XP.

I usually stick with an OS until the bitter end, but now, there are certain

softwares such as Dreamweaver that require at least XP.

I am going to stay away from Vista forever if that's possible.
