A friend of mine has a couple of desktops that she wants to upgrade if possible. One is Windows 98, the other is ME. Can they be easily upgraded to XP?

Yes they can.

See here for the minimum system requirements though.

She could also download the Upgrade Advisor tool from the bottom of this page to help confirm her computer is up to it.

I recently put XP Pro on a 7 year old 98SE computer for someone, it worked fine, albeit a bit slow.
