KC787 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 I was having Windows Installer problems as well as problems with Windows Update. After running dial a fix, both of those issues were fixed. However, now my computer is really slow and some things don't work: -McAfee Security Center doesn't open (and takes forever to load when my computer is starting) -Control Panel doesn't open - My scanner isn't working - My external hard drive isn't working - when rebooting, I get a message saying explorer.exe is not responding - iTunes takes several minutes to load - Recycle Bin doesn't open That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Administrator Tarun Posted September 4, 2008 Administrator Posted September 4, 2008 Welcome to Lunarsoft, KC787. What symptoms were you experiencing besides Windows Installer that you needed to use Dial-a-fix?
KC787 Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 Welcome to Lunarsoft, KC787. What symptoms were you experiencing besides Windows Installer that you needed to use Dial-a-fix? Thanks for the welcome. I was mainly just experiencing the two problems that I mentioned: Windows Installer issues (couldn't install new sotfware) and Windows Update was not working.
Administrator Tarun Posted September 4, 2008 Administrator Posted September 4, 2008 If you like, you could post a HijackThis log to ensure nothing else is causing the issue.

Administrator Tarun Posted September 5, 2008 Administrator Posted September 5, 2008 You can pick up StartupLite from Malwarebytes to lighten your startup. McAfee can be slow to load, it's usually bloated... I'd recommend two things. First, run sfc /scannow, which you can launch from within DAF (Tools) Next, run DAF. Just hit the green checkmark and click Go.
KC787 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 You can pick up StartupLite from Malwarebytes to lighten your startup. McAfee can be slow to load, it's usually bloated... I'd recommend two things. First, run sfc /scannow, which you can launch from within DAF (Tools) Next, run DAF. Just hit the green checkmark and click Go. I ran StartupLite, sfc/scannow, and then re-ran DAF. It didn't do much. Just about every program still takes minutes to load or doesn't load at all (i.e. McAfee). Should I try a System Restore to get me back to where I was last week and then go from there?
Administrator Tarun Posted September 5, 2008 Administrator Posted September 5, 2008 I'll ask DjLizard to look over this also. A second set of eyes is always good.
KC787 Posted September 6, 2008 Author Posted September 6, 2008 OK, so certain things are magically working again i.e. external hard drive, control panel, and recycling bin. Other programs such as my ftp software, iTunes, and McAfee either either take several minutes to open or don't open at all (in McAfee's case).
Administrator Tarun Posted September 6, 2008 Administrator Posted September 6, 2008 Have you tried reinstalling your software?
KC787 Posted September 7, 2008 Author Posted September 7, 2008 Have you tried reinstalling your software? Reinstall which software...everything that's not working? Do you not recommend a system restore?
Administrator Tarun Posted September 7, 2008 Administrator Posted September 7, 2008 I would think a System Restore would be a last resort. Ultimately that is up to you.
KC787 Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 I broke down and did a system restore last night. Everything appears to be back to the way it was except for I had NO PROBLEM installing my new software AND Windows Update still works. In addition, the general computer speed appears to be back to normal. The only thing I've noticed so far that isn't working is installing the latest Java update. I get a windows installer error. Very weird.
Administrator Tarun Posted September 9, 2008 Administrator Posted September 9, 2008 Glad to hear you got it resolved. For the Java issue, you can try JavaRa and the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
