tashunka Posted July 16, 2007 Share Posted July 16, 2007 I have been trying for some time now to get Windows updates installed (Win XP Home SP2). They download OK but fail with the familiar x80240020 error. Have tried just about everything that I can find on the Microsoft site and discussion ares, including dial-a-fix, but nothing has helped. Last few lines of WindowsUpdateLog are : 2007-07-16 14:34:31:328 1056 248 Agent * Added update {160BF1FD-863B-41DD-92D9-A6B79917DF24}.100 to search result 2007-07-16 14:34:31:328 1056 248 Agent * Found 3 updates and 27 categories in search; evaluated appl. rules of 568 out of 908 deployed entities 2007-07-16 14:34:31:328 1056 248 Agent ********* 2007-07-16 14:34:31:328 1056 248 Agent ** END ** Agent: Finding updates [CallerId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:31:328 1056 248 Agent ************* 2007-07-16 14:34:31:343 1132 f24 COMAPI >>-- RESUMED -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:31:343 1132 f24 COMAPI - Updates found = 3 2007-07-16 14:34:31:343 1132 f24 COMAPI --------- 2007-07-16 14:34:31:343 1132 f24 COMAPI -- END -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:31:343 1132 f24 COMAPI ------------- 2007-07-16 14:34:33:109 1056 248 Report REPORT EVENT: {894C5DC5-7F95-4A1D-A4E0-5E7CB7B2D972} 2007-07-16 14:34:28:109+0100 1 147 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 MicrosoftUpdate Success Software Synchronization Windows Update Client successfully detected 6 updates. 2007-07-16 14:34:36:812 1056 f00 AU FATAL: CAUClient::Launch failed, error = 0x800704DD 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI ------------- 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI -- START -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI --------- 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI - Allow source prompts: Yes; Forced: No; Force quiet: No 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI - Updates in request: 3 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI - ServiceID = {7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D} 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI - Updates to install = 3 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent ************* 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1132 a38 COMAPI <<-- SUBMITTED -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent ** START ** Agent: Installing updates [CallerId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent ********* 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * Updates to install = 3 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * Title = ATI RADEON X300 Series Driver Update 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * UpdateId = {8603F1EB-93AC-4123-A1CC-44372D637BAD}.11 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * Title = Root Certificates Update 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * UpdateId = {64F57288-B7C4-4BB8-BC27-5191361C0627}.101 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * Bundles 1 updates: 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * {56D58776-F64F-4D5F-B302-669510A1A178}.101 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * Title = Creative - Sound - SB Live! 24-bit 2007-07-16 14:34:49:375 1056 238 Agent * UpdateId = {160BF1FD-863B-41DD-92D9-A6B79917DF24}.100 2007-07-16 14:34:54:296 1056 238 Service WARNING: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800704dd for session 0 2007-07-16 14:34:54:328 1056 238 Agent * WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240020 2007-07-16 14:34:54:328 1056 238 Agent ********* 2007-07-16 14:34:54:328 1056 238 Agent ** END ** Agent: Installing updates [CallerId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:54:328 1056 238 Agent ************* 2007-07-16 14:34:54:328 1056 238 Agent WARNING: WU client failed installing updates with error 0x80240020 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI >>-- RESUMED -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI - Install call failed 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI - Reboot required = No 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI - WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240FFF; Call error code = 0x80240020 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI --------- 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI -- END -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = MicrosoftUpdate] 2007-07-16 14:34:54:343 1132 9bc COMAPI ------------- 2007-07-16 14:34:55:093 1132 a38 COMAPI WARNING: Operation failed due to earlier error, hr=80240020 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU ########### AU: Setting new AU options ########### 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU Setting AU Approval Type to 4 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU Setting Install Schedule Day to 0 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU Setting Install Schedule Time to 23 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU # Policy changed, AU refresh required = No 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU # Approval type: Scheduled (User preference) 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU # Scheduled install day/time: Every day at 23:00 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU # Auto-install minor updates: Yes (User preference) 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU AU settings changed through User Preference. 2007-07-16 14:35:55:625 1056 9d8 AU Setting AU scheduled install time to 2007-07-16 22:00:00 Someone please help. Administrator Tarun Posted July 16, 2007 Administrator Share Posted July 16, 2007 With Dial-a-fix, have you tried clicking the Flush SoftwareDistribution button and clicking "No" when the message box appears? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tashunka Posted July 17, 2007 Author Share Posted July 17, 2007 Yes, I have tried dial a fix answering both yes and no. Didn't make any difference in the end. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Administrator Tarun Posted July 17, 2007 Administrator Share Posted July 17, 2007 Taken from MSKB 910341. Open the registry editor and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Check for the existence of a Notify_Disabled subkey under Winlogon. If that subkey exists, delete it. Now, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify Check for the existence of a SensLogn subkey. If SensLogn does not exist, you will need to add this missing key and its values. Copy/paste the following, between but not including the two sets of asterisks, into Notepad and then Save as a file named SensLogn.reg Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn] "DLLName"="WlNotify.dll" "Lock"="SensLockEvent" "Logon"="SensLogonEvent" "Logoff"="SensLogoffEvent" "Safe"=dword:00000001 "MaxWait"=dword:00000258 "StartScreenSaver"="SensStartScreenSaverEvent" "StopScreenSaver"="SensStopScreenSaverEvent" "Startup"="SensStartupEvent" "Shutdown"="SensShutdownEvent" "StartShell"="SensStartShellEvent" "PostShell"="SensPostShellEvent" "Disconnect"="SensDisconnectEvent" "Reconnect"="SensReconnectEvent" "Unlock"="SensUnlockEvent" "Impersonate"=dword:00000001 "Asynchronous"=dword:00000001 Once you have created and saved the SensLogn.reg file, double-click on it, then click on Yes when asked if you want to merge the information into the registry. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tashunka Posted July 18, 2007 Author Share Posted July 18, 2007 Thanks for that. I knew that I had done that (or thought I had), but because of the different typeface that you are using, I now realise that I had typed WIN (win in upper case) instead of WlN in the DLLname key. Things are now back to normal. Many thanks. :hello: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
