I have been trying for some time now to get Windows updates installed (Win XP Home SP2). They download OK but fail with the familiar x80240020 error.

Have tried just about everything that I can find on the Microsoft site and discussion ares, including dial-a-fix, but nothing has helped. Last few lines of WindowsUpdateLog are :

With Dial-a-fix, have you tried clicking the Flush SoftwareDistribution button and clicking "No" when the message box appears?

Yes, I have tried dial a fix answering both yes and no. Didn't make any difference in the end.

Open the registry editor and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Check for the existence of a Notify_Disabled subkey under Winlogon. If that subkey exists, delete it.

Now, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Not­ify

Check for the existence of a SensLogn subkey. If SensLogn does not exist, you will need to add this missing key and its values. Copy/paste the following, between but not including the two sets of asterisks, into Notepad and then Save as a file named SensLogn.reg

Once you have created and saved the SensLogn.reg file, double-click on it, then click on Yes when asked if you want to merge the information into the registry. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Thanks for that. I knew that I had done that (or thought I had), but because of the different typeface that you are using, I now realise that I had typed WIN (win in upper case) instead of WlN in the DLLname key. Things are now back to normal.
