Trouble with Windows Update

rdlong47

Recommended Posts

after doing a repair install of XP, when I try to run windows update, I get the following message:

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems only.

To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

I am not running a MAC, I have a dell running Xp

I tried the fix Windows Update in Dial-a-fix 60.0.24.... no luck yet!

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

In Internet Explorer's address bar, enter the following:

java script:navigator.userAgent

Copy the entire string and paste it as a reply. :)

Also, are you using a firewall?

Your User Agent is: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; SIMBAR={E7C3D492-029A-4c03-A9D7-32FB89120D2B}; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; Media Center PC 4.0; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30; Media Center PC 3.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

I'm not real sure what all this is, but it looks OK to me!!!!

I've moved this topic to the Windows XP section since this is not a Dial-a-fix problem.

Here's what my user agent looks like:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

It looks like you have too many entries and I think the SIMBAR may be the culprit. So let's get a solution.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Back up and then delete the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

To back up and then delete the registry key, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

  4. On the File menu, click Export.
  5. In the File name box, type Post Platform, and then click Save.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
  8. Quit Registry Editor.
  9. If this does not resolve the problem, double-click the Post Platform.reg file that you saved in step 5 to import this key back into the registry.
