Reinstall BITS failed

Reinstall BITS failed in Dial-a-Fix (0.60.0.24).

It asks for the original SP2 disk, finds the file then I get

an error window "Installation failed."

The DAF log didn't give much useful info:

4/20/2008 8:11:09 PM -- Dial-a-fix : [v0.60.0.24] -- started

8:11:10 PM | Policy scan started

8:11:10 PM | Policy scan ended - no restrictive policies were found

The original problem I'm trying to fix is that several services inlcuding BITS service do not

start at startup. Error msg in services startup shows that the problem is with the

qmgr.dll, hence the try to reinstall BITS.

Is there a way to figure out why BITS would not be reinstalled in DAF ?

Thanks .....

Scannow -- I'm looking at the results now and will post. It's a lot of information to go through

and it looks like many files could not be restored.

BITS 2.5 -- I cannot download it since MS can't do the WGA validation due to all my PC problems.

Is there another place to download it ?

I'll post the scan results later.

So far, the following files won't restore:

Most likely. There is probably a severe dependency loss somewhere down the line which is causing every one of the problems all at once. On one customer machine, every program was freaking (in a strange way) because he had lost C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS. Another user had permissions entirely removed from C:\WINDOWS\Registration\*.*. Another had all of his Winlogon Notify keys deleted by some malware. That's something you should look at: open regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify. You should have at the very least crypt32chain, cscdll, ScCertProp, SensLogn, wlballoon, and possibly a few others (such as Schedule, termsrv). If you are missing most (or all) of the first 5 I listed then you can get a default notify .reg patch.

Have you checked out your system hardware? I would do a hard drive test now to ensure that this effort isn't in vain. See the sticky at the top of this forum and get Hitachi DFT or something to sector-test your drive. A memory test would be a good idea too, although usually memory problems are much more in-your-face (blue screens of death, etc).

Regarding Dial-a-fix's BITS installer, it's in Windows' hands pretty much the moment you click on the tool, so any errors that occur are logged by Windows (or not) and cannot be logged by Dial-a-fix.

I'm managed to fix most of it with Dial-a-Fix. Here's what I did:

1. I didn't realize DAF had a tools icon with the tools I really needed: SFC purge & SFC scan.

When I posted my scan results above, it was from doing the SFC scan manually.

DAF suggests SFC purge first, then scan. That repaired most of the scan problems.

2. I was able to finally download BITS 2.5 from MS. That fixed most of the registry problems.

3. I am left with one problem: NETBT problem: netevent.dll

Initialization failed because the driver device could not be created.

So I'm poking around to see if DAF might cover this one and I can maybe connect wirelessly again.

Dial-A-Fix is really a great tool. I hope Bill doesn't "innovate" Windows by appropriating it.

Thanks for making this tool.

I hope tools like Dial-a-fix are obsoleted by properly working operating systems!

Anyway, holy crap - I'm glad you were able to resolve things using DAF. I thought you were done for! I'm used to seeing things go downhill fast when there are errors such as the ones you described.

Also, were you running that previous SFC scan from Safe Mode? If so, that's the cause of the RPC server unavailability. (It is not possible to run SFC scans from Safe Mode - I wish I knew why and wish I could override this behavior by force.)

Thats the right attitude! :D

Many businesses gets scared when their products/services gets absolute and do everything in their power to fight it, often using lawsuits.

  • When automobiles were invented, horsebreeders must have been angry.
  • When the firetrucks powered by engines were invented, the fireworkers tried to fight that, because it meant many workers were not needed anymore, and they could cut staff. It was more important to keep their job, than to be able to effectively put out fire and save people in need.
  • When the refrigerator were getting common, the ice delivery guys hated it.
  • When the radio were invented, the music industry hated it, they tried to get it banned.
  • When the VCR were invented, the movie industry hated it.
  • The movie and music industry really hates the internet and P2P, and they're filing lawsuits and seem to still hope it will go away. :hmm:
