Getting BITS started

Featured Replies

I'm having trouble getting BITS working. When I try to start the service in XP Pro sp2 it gives me an error saying:

"Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Compute. For more information, review the System Event Log .If this is a n-Microsoft servic, contact the service vendor ,and refer to servic-specific error cod-2147023532 ."

I have tried:

1. Selecting everything on the front window of Dial-A-Fix.

2. Tools, Reinstall BITS.

3. Tools, Reinstall Automatic Updates Service.

4. SFC purge.

5. SFC scan.

6. I have run a defrag with JKDefrag.

7. Powered down the laptop.

8. Changed the log on user to local user.

What else could I try to get BITS started?

Thank you,

Docfxit

There is also the option of updating your BITS to 2.5 (included in Service Pack 3).

I also tried updating to 2.5.

Where is a good place to upload my WinodwsUpdate.log just in case someone wants to see it.

IS RPC set to auto in services?

RPC is set to Automatic and started.

RPC Locator is set to manual and stopped.

The log certainly contains any errors. (inadequate intelligence here to advise the problem, though.)

What if you try manually installing it?

scroll to the dowload area

(PS, save it to disk, install it from there.)

Thanks for the reply. That's how I did it the first time. I don't know of any other way to update BITS when it isn't working.

Have you tried reinstalling Automatic Updates as well?

I discovered that IE7 shouldn't be installed when performing a Windows install over it self. Even though I didn't have C:\Windows\IE7 it was still running.

I removed IE7

Re-installed Windows Installer 3.1

In safe mode Re-Installed BITS 2.5

Re-installed Automatic Updates

Ran WUFix.bat Windows Update Fix

I still can't get the BITS service to start.

Maybe it has something to do with Dial Up Networking. I can't get that working either.

Try installing xp service pack 3 - it is worth a try. I found out the hard way that after installing sp3 do NOT try running the tool to reinstall BITS - it broke it for me. Tried reinstalling BITS 2.5 but it tells me the version installed is already the newest version. So I can't reinstall BITS easily. I am going to try to revert with system restore or reinstall sp3 again. Good luck.
