I personally would not trust it. Is WordWeb a legitimate program that you installed? I have checked into it and seen where a few anti-spyware programs have detected it as spyware; you may want to consider an alternative.
larryb227 Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 I had a malware what appeared to be a backdoor trojan that I just could not get rid of. I downloaded your Toolkit and did the whole procedure. Could not get on the Internet while in Safe Mode so downloaded all the updates for each program out of Safe Mode. While in Safe Mode I check Network connections and the page was blank.(still is) MBAM found several and so did SuperAntiSpy. The log is after all that. Now I am not quite sure what to do with your return log as I only see Blue headings no red. I guess that's good. I do understand the other suggestions. On WordWeb I have used that on all 3 of my computers but I could find something else I suppose. I'll have to check on how to uninstall the toolbars. I really don't use them much. Do you have an issue with AVG? I am not adverse to changing to Avast as I have been checking it out. Thanks for your help.
Administrator Tarun Posted August 27, 2008 Administrator Posted August 27, 2008 Correct, nothing red is good. "Default-color items are optional, red are known to be malicious." You may want to rename HijackThis into something different, such as "Scanner" so that any malware that watches for HJT to hide itself can no longer do so. With WebWord, I just wanted to check with you to be sure it was known to you. To uninstall the toolbars, Add/Remove Programs is the best place. avast is my personal preference. AVG 7.5 was excellent, but I've heard many bad things about AVG 8.
greenknight Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 It should be added that support for AVG 7.5 ends at the end of this month. I run AVG 8 myself, I think it's not that bad. However, it uses more resources than previous versions; and running any other real-time spyware shield with it is likely to slow your computer badly. I just had to repair my install of it, it was causing random CPU spikes that ground the computer to a halt for a couple minutes at a time. The automatic update scheduler isn't working right, either, and the repair install didn't fix it. AVG 8 was a major revision of the program, and I imagine these teething problems will be worked out eventually. Whether you want to put up with it in the meantime is up to you. It is more capable than earlier versions, but more troublesome as well.

Used the download you suggested but it got complicated real fast. I installed some kind of Java so maybe you can tell with my next Hijackthis log. (I'll rename it at that time.) Haven't uninstalled the old yet. This scanning is a real time consumer. Thought of a couple of other points. I use a DVR security system made by Aver therefore the NV things I noticed. I use FF and Thunderbird all the time and only IE when It forces me too. I don't use System restore instead I use ERUNT and only keep the last 5 backups. I backup whenever I install or uninstall anything. (with ERUNT as it sits in my Quick Launch. Just in case any of this helps. Thanks
Administrator Tarun Posted August 28, 2008 Administrator Posted August 28, 2008 If you have disabled System Restore, I'd highly recommend that you turn System Restore back on. Taken from our System Volume Information wiki article by DjLizard, System Restore not only saves copies of critical system files, it also performs automated registry hive backup. You can use the hive snapshots in the SVI folder to replace broken registry hives. In short, never turn off System Restore. As for Java, the latest as of this post is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. JavaRa can take you to the exact page to get this update.

larryb227 Posted August 29, 2008 Author Posted August 29, 2008 This is the resulting HiJackthis log after doing all your suggestions. I also restarted System Restore and dumped ERUNT. I loaded Avast and it found another Trojan-gen which was removed. larryb227-hijackthis #2 and final Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 9:12:19 AM, on 8/29/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\CDANTSRV.EXE C:\Program Files\COMODO\Firewall\cmdagent.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox\StatusClient\StatusClient.exe C:\Program Files\COMODO\SafeSurf\cssurf.exe C:\Program Files\COMODO\Firewall\cfp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\MouseWare\system\em_exec.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\WordWeb\wweb32.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\sqlwriter.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Visioneer\OneTouch 4.0\OtService.exe C:\Program Files\Visioneer\OneTouch 4.0\OtMonEx.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.crawler.com/search/dispatcher.a...&tbid=60287 R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.comodo.com/search/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.crawler.com/search/ie.aspx?tb_id=60287 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = http://dnl.crawler.com/support/sa_customize.aspx?TbId=60287 R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;<local> R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Administrator Tarun Posted August 29, 2008 Administrator Posted August 29, 2008 Glad to hear that avast found and removed the trojan. You may still want to rename HijackThis to Scanner and then run it and post one last log if you're still experiencing symptoms. One more suggestion is to update to Internet Explorer 7 as it updates key features inside of Windows, making it more secure.

larryb227 Posted August 30, 2008 Author Posted August 30, 2008 Your log looks clean. Are you still experiencing any symptoms? No everything is back to normal so far. If that is it I want to thank you for your help. I learned alot. I think my whole problem was caused by me using Spy-bot and not setting it up correctly. I did not use the Immunization or set the file set. I have sense done that.
