1984
Hi all, I want to speed up my computer. Here is my log. My ewido caught a "net dot" issue. otherwise, everything came out good. I defrag, cclean, etc. What else can I do to speed things up? How do I stop running so many processes? Thanks. SenutyEnool
Quick question for you LOTW. How many resources does ZoneAlarm suck up? Reason I ask, I've removed EzTrust (or whatever it's called again ) and installed TrendMicro Security Suite 2006 (free through work) but it's really chewing up my ram. I liked EzTrust, but it didn't provide a firewall, that's why I went back to TM. Cheers

SenutyEnool
i am not sure. how do i check? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Quick check: Ctrl+Alt+Delete ---> Task Manager ---> Processes (or Running Processes) This should bring up all processes (programs) that are currently running and also if you look at the presented columns it should show 'Mem Usage' Cheers
1984
zone alarm has 3200 k give or take memory usage. is that good or bad?
SenutyEnool
Hmmm, from my perspective that's quite good as TrendMicro is pushing up to and over 70,000k just for one of it's processes . That's why I was wondering how much ZA uses. :sigh: Looks like it's time to remove TM again and go back to ETrust and ZA seeing collectively they'd use less than TM. I have a router with built-in firewall, but not sure how good it is. I've run ShieldsUp! over it and am near on stealth on all ports bar one, but I'll fix that one shortly..... hmmm, maybe I'm wasting my time then getting ZA (or any software firewall), whatcha think? I'm not to fussed about stuff getting out, because if it's new MSAS let's me know something want's to get out anyway, and all stuff I download I run Ewido and (at this stage) TrendMicro over it before opening the file. All thoughts appreciated. Cheers
1984
Would you suggest that i purchase a router with a firewall rather than run zonealarm? would that speed things up or slow things down? is yours bottom, middle, or top end? how much? why did you decide on it? is it hard to configure a router? now it seems routers are for sharing internet access and have firewall capabilities. What else do they do? What else is their purpose? is wireless as fast and as safe as wired? i have a 4 level split house, my computer is in the basement and i want to have another one on the main level which is quite a ways from this one. thats a lot of wire and playing around and such to connect the two. would wireless be my best bet? do they come with the option to have either/or? thanks bro. SenutyEnool
I currently run a DLink router/firewall and it gives me both capabilties. That is I have the option of going wireless and cabled. Most up-to-date routers should give you this option. Having said that, I'd steer away from DLink as I've had nothing but problems with it. It took me over 3 weeks of stuffing around with it, reading copious forums, before I was finally able to get both PCs to look at each other. I'm still at the stage where both PCs can see each others files and I can manipulate both from either end, but am still unable to play networked games as when I go to ping each other they can't find the other PC....... this is now 6 months after having bought the friggin' thing. Hope that helped somewhat. Cheers
Capman
is wireless as fast and as safe as wired? i have a 4 level split house, my computer is in the basement and i want to have another one on the main level which is quite a ways from this one. thats a lot of wire and playing around and such to connect the two. would wireless be my best bet? do they come with the option to have either/or? thanks bro. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Read the following page for a quick guide on router ranges, Lordoftheweb: http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireles...f/wifirange.htm Remember though, that so many things can interfere with the signal strength, such as design and structure of the property, positioning of furniture, etc. They do have the option for either/or, as they generally will have 4 ports for wired connections as well as the wireless capabilities. Depending on which level your main level is, you might find that it needs to be wired.
Monkey Proof
Several months ago our department network was hacked using our laptops that we use in our patrol cars. the wireless we were using was not secure for whatever reason and someone was able to download a bunch of malware into the laptops, then ultimately into all the systems at the station. So be sure to secure your wireless router.
