Posted October 3, 200717 yr my computer works fine. the dial-a-fix program was recommended by steve bass, today. can i or should i use Dial-a-fix as a preventative? i have the latest version 60.0.24. thanks very much
October 4, 200717 yr Dial-a-fix repairs and fixes broken stuff. A popular quote comes to mind; "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
October 4, 200717 yr Yep - I don't recommend it myself (well there's not really a point since it can't prevent, it can only set things back to defaults). It can find problems you didn't know about, though... the best section for that is section 5 (Registration center). So that PC World issue he promised to write is out? Aha! http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,137083/article.html
October 4, 200717 yr Author thanks for your assistance- i used the wrong word - preventative; but i wanted to discover what could be wrong and "prevent" any future problems. your program found 3 errors. now to learn what to do. any advice before starting? or tricks? thanks in advance-- cityman ============================= c:\programfiles\commonfile\system\OleDB\msolap80.dll (version8.00.2039) sfc/purge cache sfc/scannow in Tools development unspecified error - 0x80004005 current status- found tool dialogue- i did the purge and now doing the scannow ------------------- c:\programfiles\commonfile\system\oleDB\msolu80.dll (version8.00.2039) sfc/purge cache sfc/scannow in Tools development unspecified error - 0x80004005 current status- found tool dialogue- i did the purge and now doing the scannow ------------------ c:\windows\system32\oleau32.dll version 5.1.2600.2180 error 0x800700005 it is also suggested run "Repair Permission" which is found in Tools Dialogue. xp home will need secedit.exe. October 4, 200717 yr Author I am unable to complete system file checker- I need Windows XP Home CD. Files needed to be copied for DLL. i do not have one- my Win CD is mixed with the OEM Win CD. all compressed and mixed with trialware and drivers etc.
October 4, 200717 yr Author the CE is a recovery disk, so it will not work. or at least in the past it didn't. thanks anyway If your OEM CD is of Windows XP Home it will work just fine.
October 5, 200717 yr Author i will have to find out. thanks if i remember correctly, i tried before to use a borrowed windowsxp for scannow and it did not work. <sigh> Do you know anybody who has an XP CD you could borrow?
