Posted September 1, 200816 yr i have also posted this at MSFN,... my BITS service is off and cannot be restarted, and it's affecting MS updates. when i try to restart BITS i get error code 193: 0xc1. i have searched high and low for the last few days looking for a fix. also when i try and open Event Viewer i get another error saying MMC Snap-In cannot be created, same thing with Task Schedular. oh, when i click on BITS properties while in Services i see that Path to Executable as C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs . is this correct? i ran the HD test and passed. other problems that may or may not be related are, 1. WMC will not open 2. HP Total Care Advisor will not open 3. HP Quick Play will not open 4. HP Quick Play hotkeys do not work

September 4, 200816 yr If you open Event Viewer (Start > Run > eventvwr) you will be able to see which files were replaced by reading the "Windows File Protection" events.
February 10, 200916 yr I am having pretty much the same problem. I ran the sfc /scannow and it fixed it well enough to work my google updater, but my windows update still does not work. I get the following response from the scan. Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] Copyright © 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\******>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th em. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log C:\Users\******> The file, CBS.log is too large to attach here.
February 17, 200916 yr Administrator I'll look into this and see if there's a way to repair Vista's automatic updates.
April 25, 200915 yr If you open Event Viewer (Start > Run > eventvwr) you will be able to see which files were replaced by reading the "Windows File Protection" events. I like Event Log Explorerâ„¢ to manage the Event logs and it works with Vista: http://www.eventlogxp.com It requires a free Personal license for personal non-commercial use: http://www.eventlogxp.com/order.html I have not been spammed by requesting the free license in the several years I have used Event Log Explorerâ„¢.
