  1. Extended support for Windows Vista will be ending on April 11th, 2017. Mainstream support ended on April 10, 2012. Taking that into account along with how few people are looking for support for Windows Vista on this forum I'm announcing that this subforum will close and be moved to the Archives. However, should activity pick up in this forum then it will remain open. Based upon the number of posts it appears that people have moved to a better, more modern OS. Until the end of April hits, this topic will remain open and discussion allowed whether or not it should remain open past the end of April.

  2. Compcln.exe is an optional tool that you can run after you install SP2. This tool removes older versions of components that have been updated in SP2, which are stored during the installation in case you need to uninstall SP2 later. Saving these older components increases the amount of disk space that is used. Typically, you should run Compcln.exe if you want to reclaim this disk space after applying SP2 and if you will not need to uninstall SP2. Note, however, that you cannot uninstall SP2 after you run this tool. You can use this tool both online and offline, but you must have SP2 installed and you must use the correct version of the tool. If you are running this file on…

Hi, My daughter's laptop is very slow. It takes forever to load up and open IE. It also takes forever to move from webpage to webpage. I installed AVG and updated the definitions. I did a complete scan and it found no threats. I installed Malwarebytes and did a quick scan and it found nothing. I ran a full scan on malwarebytes during the night and it didn't complete the scan. The labtop seemed to be frozen. I had to do a manual shut down. I started in in safemode and while in safe mode it is much much faster. I cannot update windows. It just freezes up. I attempted to install Microsoft Security Essentials, but I was not able to install I did a disk clean…

I have a newer tower running Windows Vista SP2, Core 2 duo, 3GH, 400G hard drive, NVdia GeForce 7600GT. When I insert a flash drive or an external HD, Windows wants to install drivers which it cannot find. I know Vista comes with the USB drivers and my game wheel, joystick, etc work fine. Can't use a USB flash drive because windows will not install without drivers. Anyone know why or how to remedy this problem?

  6. I recently cleaned up an Acer Aspire M1610 desktop, Vista OS, for a friend. This is a low-end computer, so I know it doesn't have much "umph" when it comes to graphics. After cleaning out the horrendous # of temp files, removing startup programs, games and other junk that came preloaded on on it, I installed Google Earth. It installs, and when you click on the icon, it loads (but in a relatively small window -- about ¼ of the screen area) and shows the globe. But if you try to do ANYTHING. . . like grab the window frame to enlarge it, or try to enter an address . . . it crashes the computer and I get a BSOD. The motherboard has integrated SiS 3 Mirage graphics, and I u…

  7. Sorry for the title, but it seemed to say it. I have hundreds of music directories in the form of artist/album/*.mp3 that I want to copy the tracks from, into a single directory that my players will correctly play from. They don't seem to like multiple separate directories. Is there an easy way? Tips much appreciated.

  8. This is going to be hard to explain. I normally don't allow Windows to Update because it screws up my computer. But today I updated anyway (for a good reason, which I won't take the time to explain). After the update was complete, I uninstalled some software and it prompted me to restart, so I did. But after about 10 minutes it still said "Shutting Down", so I got exasperated and turned it off manually. I waited 15 seconds and turned it back on. Then, for some reason, it started saying "Configuring Updates" again, even though the update was previously completed. Now it seems to be in some kind of endless loop. It configures updates, says it's shutting down, …

I have a Gateway PC with a Gateway Monitor. Thing started happening about a month ago. First the 264MB Graphics Board quit after I noticed it was heating up to 179 F. It would go off, cool down a little and then play again. Finally it quit all together. So, the Generic on the MotherBoard took over and it has been O.K. for a while. Today I left it on while leaving for a while. When I returned it was blah! About 1/2 of the picture was on the left, with a large blank space in the middle and just a little of the screen on the right. I could run the mouse all the way to the left and it would appear on the small part. After fooling around I set the screen resolu…

I don't know much about anything, especially Host File. Had the opportunity to download a Host File from some Forum. Don't remember what or where Since then I've had trouble connecting to some pages, especially Microsoft. I realize it is blocking a lot of advertising and that is good. Wish now I had not done it. Is there a way to go back to what it had before download the MVP Host Files. If I'm not clear, see the attached.

  11. Started by Anxt,

I have had my laptop for about 2 years now, and up until this past July it was working fine. However, I began running into the issue that the computer would not boot properly. It would load normally up until the loading bar appeared, at which point it would freeze. Very rarely, it will work at seemingly random times, but it often takes me hours or even days to get it to boot. I run Windows Vista 32 bit, and when trying to boot in safe mode, it loads normally until it reaches whatever file is after crcdisk.sys. That is the last file I see it load before it stops working. The LED indicating that the hard drive is working stops flashing and stays off. I have t…

Hi everyone, I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron just 16 months old. I bought a set of Logitech Digital Speakers because I find the sound on the Dell too low. All worked fine until a couple of days ago until I plugged the speakers in and there was no sound. An error pop up says Component Registration Failure. Some files needed to play audio or video are missing or corrupt. WMC component registration may have failed. Tried to contact Microsoft but the camel and the eye of the needle story comes to mind there!! Tried all sorts of suggestions on the Dell forum, nothing has worked. Been at this now for two days and going nuts. Is there no way for me to un…

On my old computer, torrents did really well... It's the same tracker, with the usual amount of seeds to it, in this case it would be A subtitling group called "Horrible Subs" They aren't horrible mind you. But anyway, This particular tracker went at my top download speed... which with my crappy Cable internet is 350ish KBPS But, now. With my new computer the torrents suck. I'm pretty sure it's topped out at 100kbps and fluctuates rapidly from there. Down to atleast 20kbps. I've made sure the port it uses is forwarded, put in the right internet speed... I don't know what else to do, any help would be appreciated. I use Utorrent.

Yesterday, I used a computer with Windows Vista (Home Premium), unfortunately only for 10-15 minutes. It had a two widescreen monitors, one 22" and one 24" and 2 gb RAM, and a AMD dual-core CPU. There was also this other computer, with a 30" widescreen monitor, it was sweet. I've used it for too little time to give a reasonable and fair opinion, but I have got some real first impressions. On the computer (which was a good computer), Vista ran fast, it was smooth. The Windows Task Manager has a new tab called "Services". So, they're not anymore in the "Processes" tab. This, I think seemed like a good idea. The system ran about 50+ processes, but it had some open…

If my installation of Ubuntu goes well, I can see myself wanting to do a full install of it. However, I would like to have a Windows Vista installation disc. Now, as the serial number is unique to me, is it legal and possible to download an installation disc for Vista? Not an illegal key, as I have a legal one, just the iso.files which I could burn, so that should anything happen I could reinstall Vista with my current serial code/key? And if so, where should I go?

  22. 24. Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and a new Vista user. My son's desktop pc has Windows XP so when I got the laptop I thought I would give Vista a try. Bit of a 'love hate' relationship at the moment, but I'll plod on, go with the times and all that. I'm trying to find a good disk defragmenter, Vista's own is so slow its driving me nuts, plus it's not graphic so I've no idea what it's doing. On the desk top we have Diskeeper, which is brilliant very fast very graphic, plenty of choices etc. Tried to install this on the laptop but its not Vista compatable. Same goes for 1-Click Maintenance and Window washer. Any advice here would be welcome. Thanks, great foru…
