NewsBot Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Pidgin is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq). Download: Pidgin 2.7.3 Changes: Changelog Homepage: Pidgin.im View the full article Quote

Administrator Tarun Posted August 15, 2010 Administrator Posted August 15, 2010 Have you ever used it, Mike? It feels like it's seriously lacking in many aspects. I've been using it since the name changed (2.0 basically) and despite all of the releases, there hasn't been any major, significant improvements. Quote
0_0 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 -> Have you ever used it, Mike? Yeah, I'm using it now but I only use the most basic features I suppose, being on dialup. I use the portable version you create from the zip files along with the somewhat dated 'purple plugin pack' - it seems OK to me. I've also used mIRC, Trillian, AdiIRC. -> It feels like it's seriously lacking in many aspects. All I was wondering is what you would like to see added, fixed, whatever, I wasn't questioning your opinion just wanted the details :questionmark: Quote
Administrator Tarun Posted August 24, 2010 Administrator Posted August 24, 2010 Yeah, I understand. It's rather hard to explain really. It just gives the impression it could be a lot better, smoother, etc. I've used it on Ubuntu and it looks a lot better there. I guess I've been looking at the new Trillian 5 too much. As Trillian looks to have a bit more of a professional feel than Pidgin which feels rather... cartoony. Quote
0_0 Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 It's funny you use the word 'cartoony', this is how I look at Apple. I have little experience wih Apple but used one for a few semesters in an audio production class and that is exactly how I described the interface - cartoony, overly 3d, not sure exactly, but every time you rolled your mouse over something it sprung out of nowhere and increased in size by 3 times (at least the items in that task bar thing at the bottom). Has Windows 7 'followed suit', not sure, I haven't used it yet? I actually like a nice GUI, pleasant colors, nice buttons, 'oth', the WindowBlinds themes and all - too much, 'imo' a waste of system resources regardless if it is even noticed, just one more driver or service to troubleshoot. Eldmannen Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Windows XP looks was described as Fisher-Price. Quote
Administrator Tarun Posted August 27, 2010 Administrator Posted August 27, 2010 I rarely heard that about the default XP theme. I believe you have that confused with Apple products. :questionmark: Quote
Eldmannen Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 I dislike Apple. Their products are aesthetically beautiful though. The Aqua look on Mac OS X is beautiful. It looks nice and clean. Quote
James_A Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Windows XP looks was described as Fisher-Price. For the default theme, I agree. I rarely heard that about the default XP theme. I believe you have that confused with Apple products. No, Eldmannen, is right. It's quite a common description, in the UK at least, because of Microsoft's over-use of primary colours (some might say garish colours). I've also heard it described as "Early Learning Centre" for the same reason. First thing I do, if I have control of an XP instance, is change from the default Luna/Blue theme. Anything will do, but Royale is much better and also doesn't need any hacked files, since it is signed by Microsoft. . Quote
0_0 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 This is a Royale-like theme, Windows Embedded, no hacking needed, installs easily. ...Windows Embedded for XP & 2003 I edited the image to get rid of the text. Blue is my favorite color, I like it :P Quote
greenknight Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I got tired of the blue color scheme, eventually, change mine to silver. Quote
