I wouldn't trust McAfee.

Well, I'm not a fan of McAfee either, but when you are a BT broadband customer, that's what you get.

@Marvin:

You appear to have TWO Antivirus programs running: Windows Defender and McAfee.

Is your computer VERY slow to start up?

Apart from the BT "helper" programs, there's other stuff there that will slow your computer down, but I'll wait for Tarun to look at your log, first.

@Tarun:

4oD is Channel 4's 4 on Demand Internet TV service.

I'd uninstall any/all toolbars. If you're not using McAfee, I'm uninstall it, run the McAfee uninstaller found in the Anti-Malware Toolkit, and if you need free protection look into Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast.

@Marvin:

No, Windows Defender is just an antispyware - it's can be run along with an antivirus with no problems.

However, MS Defender has been superseded by Microsoft Security Essentials, which does include antivirus along with Defender's antispyware engine - so if you install MSE, there's no point in keeping Defender.

However, MS Defender has been superseded by Microsoft Security Essentials, ...

Which still uses the MsMpEng.exe engine, hence my confusion. Thanks for the correction.

I've seen the same combination of files, as listed in this HJT log, bring a laptop almost to a standstill. BT (one of UK's biggest ISPs) link up with both Yahoo and McAfee and the combination overloads any older computers. An old Fujitsu laptop (Celeron CPU) took over a hour to start up before I fixed it. One of the main culprits was one of the BT "helpers" (IIRC it was BTHelpNotifier.exe).

There's rather a lot starting up on this computer: Java, Adobe Reader, ARM, McAfee, Windows Defender, Bt/Yahoo helper, Yahoo updater, iTunes, QuickTime, 4oD, Dell's support app, something from Installshield (don't know what that is), Google updater, and more.

I didn't mean to imply an endorsement of Defender - I dumped it years ago, didn't think it was very effective. Just saying it won't conflict with antivirus.

Tarun's quite right, at least get rid of the toolbars - they're a needless drag on your system. And McAfee is a big resource hog, yet not a really good AV - scans are slow, with many false positives, and it's not good at detecting new viruses. It does do well at detecting known viruses, but so do plenty of others. You could do better with a much lighter program.

Which still uses the MsMpEng.exe engine, hence my confusion. Thanks for the correction.

I figured that was what misled you; you're welcome.

There's rather a lot starting up on this computer...

You've certainly got the British talent for understatement :P - there's a huge load of junk running at startup, it must be horribly slow.

One of the toolbars is Ask:

O2 - BHO: Ask Toolbar BHO - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll

I think Fred's T-Tools AntiSeptic (by Thomas Hoen and Fred de Vries) will remove that, along with a few others. See the website HERE for details and download.

I don't have any 'toolbars' running but you can see them???

Your HijackThis log shows the Yahoo toolbar and McAfee Siteadvisor toolbar, as well as the Ask toolbar - browser toolbars, you'd see them in Internet Explorer. You don't?

Some of these toolbars can be hard to get rid of completely. Use the link James_A provided to T-Tools Antiseptic, that will remove the Ask and Yahoo toolbars (or their remains).

To get rid of the McAfee Siteadvisor toolbar, I think you have to uninstall McAfee Siteadvisor. If you think you need it, you can get similar functionality with much lower overhead by replacing it with the Web of Trust browser add-on. That has no toolbar, and you can easily disable its pop-up alerts if you find them annoying (that's what I do).
