Posted July 17, 200717 yr I am working on XP home edition. I need to know if the file "svchost.exe" is the same in XP home edition as in XP pro. This file initiates all .exe files and cannot be replaced while the OS is running. I need to replace this file and have no install disk ecxept XP pro. Thanks......
July 17, 200717 yr Administrator The best way to fix/replace any problematic issues it has is to go to Start > Run and enter sfc /scannow Why do you need to replace the file?
July 18, 200717 yr Author This file has been corrupted by a worm, the system works but this, and 2 registry entries are the last "remnants".
July 18, 200717 yr Administrator Since it was corrupted by a worm, you may want to first run sfc /purgecache, then sfc /scannow. It may ask for the Windows CD to restore some items.
July 18, 200717 yr Author Thanks. I don't have a copy of XP home, that is why I need to know if the files are the same. I do have XP Pro disks.
September 17, 200717 yr Thanks. I don't have a copy of XP home, that is why I need to know if the files are the same. I do have XP Pro disks. They are the same, but sfc is going to require the same type of disc (XP Home) to do the sfc that you used to install the OS. Perhaps you can borrow an XP Home CD from someone to do the sfc?
September 18, 200717 yr Author Thanks for the "intel", but the system crashed this morning--time for a fresh install.
September 18, 200717 yr Thanks for the "intel", but the system crashed this morning--time for a fresh install. Yeah, fresh install is good. Then you know that no spyware is still left deep within the system somewhere. This time, I guess you install XP Pro which is better than XP Home. In the future, keep safe and don't get infected with malware again.
