Seramar
My system would not run with sp2......... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hey, Laboo. First of all be sure to run the following anti-spyware tools, in this order, in safe mode, and remove everything they find. CWShredder About:buster Ad-aware with all updates, full system scan Spybot search and destroy, with all updates, don't forget to immunize the system. Reboot into normal mode, install windows defender and acquire all udpates. Reboot into safe mode, run a full system scan. Get us a list of everything that is in your add/remove programs list and leave it here, we will tell you everything to uninstall (some spyware can be removed through there). When we're all done with those things there are a few more things which need to be done, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. And you will HAVE to install service pack 2. Without it windows XP is like a fortress with paper walls. You need to be doing ALL windows updates. I have installed it on hundreds, if not thousands, of systems and rarely experience any issues. It was true that at one point it did cause issues, but much like all microsoft products most of the kinks have been worked out. I can not guarantee it will not cause issues again, but you have to try it. If all of this fails, or SP2 gunks up the computer again, it's time for a clean install to start things off on the right foot. We can help you with that, too. Having a clean install with everything installed in the right order will help to maintain the integrity and stability of your system in the long run. Good luck, we'll wait for your reply -Seramar
corjello
^^you do know that we have a page dedicated to this right? Im wondering though if laboo, try installing SP2 and then installing all your driver updates and stuff. It is very critical that you install it. )corjello(

DjLizard
There were two main reasons why SP2 wouldn't install on certain machines when it first came out: malware, and buggy BIOS code. You should check for a BIOS upgrade from your computer or motherboard manufacturer as many systems that would not boot after SP2 was installed will suddenly boot fine once a BIOS flash has been performed. I know it for a fact, because I've had machines not boot after installing SP2, and a simple BIOS flash made them boot again. I've fixed tens of thousands of computers in my life, and I have installed SP2 on every machine that's ever come across my bench. None have left my shop without SP2, and none of them had any issues installing SP2 after a BIOS upgrade was performed.

laboo
Well, it is plugged in right? *Cliché tech joke* <{POST_SNAPBACK}> let's give you a rundown on what my system is doing..... the harddrive runs in overdrive.....and it will shutdown. when I sneak a peek at my task manager the only thing running is csrss.exe at 97 to 100 %. I some how a few days ago did something to cause it to stop and it was ok for a few days. in the mean time Process Idle started running 100 % and I had another item running 100 %. So I was able to turn off the one but I can't remember what it was called. Now, I am back in the same boat..... Process Idle has quit and csrss.exe has taken over again. when I try to update my windows my system wil lock up. I have managed to get Norton to run now, if it's really running..... before half way thru a Norton scan it would shut my system down. If we can get my system into a little bit better shape I will install SP2. At this time there is no garentee that my system wil stay up for a long period of time ( IF ) it is running in overdrive. I normally leave my system on all the time. But find that it has shutdown when I wake up in the morning. The last couple of nights it has not done this......sometime it locks up on me when I am trying to use it and shuts down or I have to unplug it to get it to shutdown..... Any Ideas!!!!! :eyeroll:
