At the Plastics Electronics trade fair in Frankfurt, Siemens developers exhibited miniature color displays that can be printed on paper or foil. These can be produced at very low cost compared to LCD panels. They are expected to be on the market by 2007. The displays operate using electrochromic substances, materials that change color when an electrical voltage shifts charges in their molecules.

The popular Firefox extension Bookmark Backup has a new version in testing, with a major change in function. Up to now, this extension has backed up bookmarks and, optionally, other Firefox profile data, each time the browser shut down. The new 0.4 version, however, also backs up this data at intervals while Firefox is running. This occurs each 2 hrs by default, but this can be modified by the user. This "partial rewrite" of the program also aims to improve reliability. Pike, the extension's author, is seeking users to help test the new version, download available here: http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/?addon=bb

Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is now available for download. This is the first Beta release of the next generation Firefox browser, to be released later this year, and it is being made available to the developer and testing community for compatibility testing and to solicit feedback. Note: This is not the final release of the Web browser, it has been made available for testing purposes only, with no end-user support. If that sounds scary, you'd probably be better off with the latest version of Firefox 1.0. Download: Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 (Windows)
