Security company Prevx has released details of a bizarre mini-war that has developed between itself and the creators of the notorious Gromozon malware website. The purpose of Gromozon appears to have been to infect users of Italian blogs and message boards with software for the purpose of generating fraudulent traffic to websites and, where appropriate, installing a premium-rate dialler. Displaying a range of complex behaviour, an ability to evolve rapidly, and the willingness to defend itself from counter-measures, Gromozon is considered among the most complex malware systems yet to emerge. Google plans to launch a new downloadable application for Java-enabled mobile devices that acts as a client for Gmail, letting users read, create, delete, search, send and receive e-mail messages. The move is the latest by a major provider of online services to enhance its offerings in mobile devices, considered one of the next big Internet frontiers. With improvements in handset technology and mobile data access, companies like Google are trying to move fast to replicate the popularity of their desktop-based services in cell phones and other similar devices. A second security flaw that could cause the new Firefox 2 browser to crash has been publicly disclosed. The vulnerability lies in the way the open-source browser handles JavaScript code. Viewing a rigged Web page will cause the browser to exit, a representative for Mozilla, the publisher of the software, said Wednesday. Contrary to claims on security mailing lists, the bug cannot be exploited to run arbitrary code on a PC running Firefox 2, the representative said. A security hole in Visual Studio is being used in attacks that target users of the developer suite, Microsoft has warned. The flaw lies in an ActiveX control in Visual Studio 2005, the software maker said in a security advisory sent out late Tuesday. "An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system," the software maker warned. Security researchers on Monday warned of a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 7 that could allow malicious attackers to alter content in a legitimate Web site's pop-up window. The browser flaw could affect users who visit a trusted site by opening a pop-up window in that site but containing malicious code. This is the second IE 7 flaw that has been discovered since Microsoft released the browser two weeks ago. Last week, a security flaw was discovered in IE 7 that could spoof the address of a pop-up window. With exploit code for an OS X vulnerability released recently and a compromised Australian university Mac server caught hosting malware in August, it may be time Apple admitted its platform is no more secure than any other. While Apple users laud their systems as unbreakable pillars of security in a dangerous world, unsusceptible to the malware attacks that make life on Windows so hazardous, the headlines keep coming. In August, the University of New South Wales was, no doubt, surprised to learn one of its Mac servers had been hijacked by baddies to host some malware disguised as a Microsoft patch. University system administrators interviewed by ZDNet Australia were pu…

Beautifull, my sound works now that Apple released iTunes 7.0.1. Honestly, this is what itunes 7 should have been, Apple is not a company that should trip on program compaitbility issues (many poeple cross the 'net were having trouble with iTunes 7). So, now that it is all streamlined, i am once again in love! )corjello(

For the second time in as many weeks a group of security professionals has released a third-party fix for a Windows flaw that is actively being used in cyberattacks. The group, calling itself the Zeroday Emergency Response Team, or ZERT, created the patch so Windows users can protect their PCs while Microsoft works on an official update. People have a choice of third-party fixes. Security company Determina on Friday released a patch it authored for the same flaw. The flaw affects Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, and could be exploited via the Internet Explorer Web browser through a component called WebViewFolderIcon, Microsoft said in a security a…

SAN DIEGO--The open-source Firefox Web browser is critically flawed in the way it handles JavaScript, two hackers said Saturday afternoon. An attacker could commandeer a computer running the browser simply by crafting a Web page that contains some malicious JavaScript code, Mischa Spiegelmock and Andrew Wbeelsoi said in a presentation at the ToorCon hacker conference here. The flaw affects Firefox on Windows, Apple Computer's Mac OS X and Linux, they said. "Internet Explorer, everybody knows, is not very secure. But Firefox is also fairly insecure," said Spiegelmock, who in everyday life works at blog company SixApart. He detailed the flaw, showing a slide that di…

Microsoft issued a rare, out-of-cycle Windows patch on Tuesday that fixed one flaw, but attacks through other known, yet-to-be-plugged holes continue. Microsoft on Wednesday warned of "limited zero-day attacks" that exploit a new flaw in PowerPoint, Microsoft's widely used presentation tool. For the attack to be carried out, a user must first open a malicious PowerPoint file attached to an e-mail or otherwise provided to them by an attacker, Microsoft said in a security advisory. With the news that thousands of web sites are already exploiting an Internet Explorer flaw, Microsoft has been stung into action and rushed out a patch instead of waiting until the next Patch Tuesday on October 10. The flaw, which is in the most severe category of critical, would enable attackers to gain complete control of a user's computer if the target simply visited a malicious web site. A group of computer hackers and human rights workers have launched a specially-crafted version of Firefox that claims to give users complete anonymity when they surf the Web. Dubbed "Torpark" and based on a portable version of Firefox 1.5.0.7, the browser will run from a USB drive, so it leaves no installation tracks on the PC. It protects the user's privacy by encrypting all in- and outbound data, and also anonymizes the connection by passing all data through the TOR network, which masks the true IP address of the machine.
