What do you all think about this? I don't like it. "A Windows shortcut "trick," which could allow an executable file to be launched when a user types a Web address into Internet Explorer, is not a security vulnerability, Microsoft said. Using Windows XP and Internet Explorer, a user could type in a Web address--such as www.microsoft.com--into a browser, and instead of launching the Web site the browser would run an executable file located on the user's computer. To test the so-called trick, try the following: • Right click on the Desktop and create a new Shortcut • Point the shortcut to an executable--such as c:\windows\system32\calc.exe • Call the shor…

"Three months ago, we had a chat with Novell Linux evangelist Andreas Girardet who waxed lyrical about his company's desktop product SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLED) version 10. This was to be the Windows killer, the desktop Linux to end all desktop Linux products, the one that would make 2006 the year of the Linux desktop. However, we were expecting it by the end of June and it seems to be a little late." iTWire I hope that this isn't delayed too long. I'm really excited about this.

Hahaha...I love it when the bad guys get busted. The Metropolitan Police's Computer Crime Unit, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI Finland) and the Finnish Pori Police Department, have arrested a 63-year-old man in Suffolk, a 28-year-old man in Scotland, and a 19-year-old man in Finland. The men, who are all suspected of being members of the M00P virus-writing gang, have been arrested in connection with a conspiracy to infect computers with malware. Vista beta sucks up battery juice By Ina Fried Staff Writer, CNET News.com Published: June 2, 2006, 4:00 AM PDT Windows Vista delivers some pretty snazzy new graphics, but all that "wow" can be a real drain. With the new version of Windows, Microsoft has created an operating system that offers advances in many areas, but laptop battery life is not one of them. Going by internal tests at one hardware maker, which declined to be named, there is noticeably lower battery life when Vista runs in its "average power" mode. Microsoft has said that the current versions of the update deliver less battery life than Windows XP, but the company has also said it hopes …

Easy teamwork at your fingertips with high-tech table Friday, June 2, 2006 Posted: 1452 GMT (2252 HKT) KAMAKURA, Japan (AP) -- When a small group crowds around a personal computer to work on a project, there's often considerable shuffling for a good view of the monitor and control of the mouse or keyboard. A new technology from Mitsubishi Electric Corp. aims to make such collaboration easier by borrowing some ideas from a common piece of furniture: the table. Mitsubishi's DiamondTouch displays a PC screen on a high-tech tabletop. People sitting around it use their fingers to create and manipulate projected virtual objects, with the system knowing whose fingers …

What if the Internet were like cable television, with Web sites grouped like channels into either basic or premium offerings? What if a few big companies decided which sites loaded quickly and which ones slowly, or not at all, on your computer? Welcome to the brave new Web, brought to you by Verizon, Bell South, AT&T and the other telecommunications giants (including PopSci and CNN.com's parent company, Time Warner) that are now lobbying Congress to block laws that would prevent a two-tiered Internet, with a fast lane for Web sites able to afford it and a slow lane for everyone else. Specifically, such companies want to charge Web sites for the speedy delivery…

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Symantec Corp.'s leading antivirus software, which protects some of the world's largest corporations and U.S. government agencies, suffers from a flaw that lets hackers seize control of computers to steal sensitive data, delete files or implant malicious programs, researchers said Thursday. Symantec said it was investigating the issue but could not immediately corroborate the vulnerability. If confirmed, the threat to computer users would be severe because the security software is so widely used and because no action is required by victims using the latest versions of Symantec Antivirus to suffer a crippling attack over the Internet. Symantec has …

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- For some, the Internet it has become an addiction, adversely affecting their lives and their family's lives. While not yet defined as a true addiction, many people are suffering the consequences of obsession with the online world, warns Dr. Diane M. Wieland, who treats patients with computer addiction in her practice in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. For some people, the Internet may promote addictive behaviors and pseudo-intimate interpersonal relationships, reports Wieland in the journal, Perspectives in Psychiatric Care. "Such cyberspace contacts may result in cyber disorders such as virtual relationships that evolve into online marital infidelity …

Many websites are offering downloads of Firefox 1.5.0.4, but it has not been released yet. I tried 2 of them from different sites, they were builds from May 4 - the first Release Candidate came out May 8. The May 4 build seemed to leak memory pretty bad, I don't recommend using it. If anyone wants to try 1.5.0.4rc2, it's here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir...candidates/rc2/

The Places bookmark/history system is going to be disabled in Branch nightly builds later this week, as it's been decided that Places will not be included in Firefox 2. In order to allow users to retain bookmarks that were saved in Places, builds are now available with the ability to export the Places bookmarks as html so they can be copied back into the browser after the update to a non-Places build. For details, see Mozilla Developer News . Maybe this belongs on the front page, but I'm too tired, I can't think...
