Administrator Tarun Posted July 21, 2008 Administrator Share Posted July 21, 2008 Recently I've been considering adding SUPERAntiSpyware to the PC Maintenance guide and into the distributed packages in LunarDownloader. Should this be included, Windows Defender most likely will be removed and replaced by SAS. I would like to hear thoughts and opinions on this choice. :)
RTZ
A last minute post I'm on my way out of town will be gone for awhile but i think SUPERAntispyware would be a superior replacement for Windows Defender. Microsoft is not that attentive with Defender's updates of new Spyware definitions and is lagging in urgency getting them to its users.. I feel adding SUPERAntispyware will only strengthen the appeal and effectiveness of using the Lunar Downloader

greenknight
Never used SAS either, so I'm not sure. On the other hand, I think laserjet is right about Defender; I dumped it some time ago.
Tarq57
I have SAS on the PC, have had for a while. Reading a few HJT logs, over a time (I browse these a bit) it's quite telling how many malware-affected computers are using WD. Not so many running SAS, especially resident, seem to have these issues, and sometimes SAS is recommended- and does the job- for some malware that in the past would need a few more specialist tools, involving the "helper" writing several scripts to run. I think any malware toolkit could only benefit by its inclusion. Others I think worth giving consideration to are MBAM, and (bit more specialist/noob unfriendly) the excellent AVZ antiviral toolkit. I indicate this as "noob unfriendly" because AFAIK the only help files/support forums are in Russian, and it's possible to seriously bork the OS if misused. RTZ
quick post borrowing my nephews laptop. why not even consider A-square free as well its also reliable. but please include SAS for sure,
Administrator Tarun Posted July 24, 2008 Author Administrator Share Posted July 24, 2008 A-squared has had horrible detection and false positives. One website I've seen mentioned how horrible A-squared is, which I agree with. However they say Spybot is useless. Perhaps the most disappointing test was A-Squared, which if you ignore the 10 tracking cookies, only detected a paltry 3 threats from the original infection, and none of these were malware as such, but simply mechanisms by which malware may operate. These remained even after cleaning with the previous three products. More disappointingly, A-Squared gives no real indication of scan times, having just a progress bar which shows 100% complete long before the scan was actually finished. Both Spybot S&D and Spyware Terminator were ineffective against the infections on my test system, detecting approximately 5 – 8% of the original infections. After cleaning, there was nothing left for these to claim any glory at all, and I find it hard to recommend either.
DjLizard
I've never used SAS but I hate Windows Defender. I was told by a former Digital Doctors tech that SAS can remove a few things that none of the other stuff that we used could remove. He gave it two thumbs up, and I trust his judgment, so I'd say what the hell... give it a shot.
RTZ
Tarun , "OUCH THAT HURT" , but upon further review or rather reviews its a toss up same on spybot like you yourself has stated these reviews are often massaged by incentives. but you are a Tech and your opinion carries much more weight for me. it was just a suggestion and its a freeware but definitely add SAS. Administrator Tarun Posted July 24, 2008 Author Administrator Share Posted July 24, 2008 Some think so, but it finds things that most scanners miss. As long as it keeps doing that, it's worth using.

YoKenny
I used SUPERAntiSpyware a while back but I did not like it and I can't remember why I didn't like it. i agree SPYBOT is good. As long as you don't include its poorly maintained HOSTS file. I prefer WinPatrol to Spybot S&D's TeaTimer. ( Woof ) In fact I like WinPatrol so much I purchased the PLUS update and even have its Flash Drive: http://winpatrol.stores.yahoo.net/winpatro...-wristband.html A-squared has had horrible detection and false positives. With a 33MB download makes it only a Norton ( Symantec ) lover would want. I like MBAM: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Update its definitions then run a Quick scan. Administrator Tarun Posted August 5, 2008 Author Administrator Share Posted August 5, 2008 Yeah MBAM does a nice job. I just wish the GUI was smaller, or all that unused space was put to good use.

I agree with Tarun, 'A-squared" is like :"Trojan Remover" all talk, no action and has been around for quite some time, used it many years ago and it was not effective then and the latest re-incarnation is not useful at all to me personally. Nothing against Windows Defender, but its a pain in the rear when I try to connect remotely to a Vista computer, it will often block my attempt, yeah I know maybe its supposed to do that, but even after the client tells it to allow or ignore and I'm coming in on port 80 Geez, and it's freezing me out. I'm all for Super-Antispyware free version, I use it 10 times a day on computers. It's rated in my top 5 tools for cleaning up malware and trojans, great engines, always improving the product, d*** nice program. Windows defender is a real time application but to me its just a real pain in the rear.
Caveman
Note on SAS: I have used it 7 to 10 times a day on client computers for quite awhile now, I'm surprised it took so long to add it. Its afirst rate app. and very effective.
