Hi people, Its once again been quite a while since I've last bene here, I've been using lubuntu for so long that I've forgotten a lot of what is the best sofware for windows security. I'm fixing up my girlfriend's laptop at the moment (Windows 7). Her norton ran out, and wa slooking on here to find out what the best (free) antivirus is. I was expecting to see avast - but under the anti-malware toolkit form lunarsoft, it gives the options for avast or avira. And reading topics relating to anti-virus software, Tarun mentions Microsoft Security Essentials, and I've heard some people complain that avast isn't particularly good anymore? I've put on Microsoft Securi…

Hi there, Been wondering about how decent the built-in anti-viruses are for Windows 7-10. I ask as for some friends who have 10 I recommended getting rid of their built-in Norton (as their laptops are very slow) and sticking to Windows Defender for the moment. Do you think Defender is decent enough anti-virus/malware? And the same goes for a windows 7 laptop I'm working on with built-in Norton, I'm going to remove Norton but is MSE good enough? I understand Windows Defender in Windows 10 is better than MSE? I ask as on the wiki I see recommendations of antivirus but no discussion of windows defender/MSE? If MSE and/or Defender aren't sufficient, what free antivirus …

Hi all. With MSE no longer available for download for XP (and with limited updates in the future), what would be the best antivirus and antimalware set-up? I have a bunch of questions as ever; Currently have Avast, but was wondering if AVG would be better? Or anything else? As stand-alone additional scanners/blockers, I just have SpywareBlaster to help protect, and MalwareBytes available as a standalone scanner. Is it worth adding Superantispyware to the mix, or indeed anything else (I of course have CCleaner)? Is it worth keeping XP? My family is using it on there desktop, and really can't afford to upgrade to Vista or any of the above (and I don't think it would r…

I feel as though CCleaner is getting worse and worse. I've seen others around the web say the same thing, listing off what they dislike about it. CCleaner has been recommended as the disk cleanup utility to go to. Mainly because there was nothing else that was safe and reliable. Over time I've looked at CCleaner and wondered why it has not improved. Why are there not basic explanations for what it will clean, saying what it will do and things of that nature. While that may take a lot due to what all it cleans, this would also protect users from cleaning something they don't wish to remove. That includes things like settings for how they have their windows positioned, sy…

Suppose you've been caught installing malware on computers twice, I imagine you would make sure you wouldn'd be caught again. Not Chinese computer maker Lenovo. In the spring of 2015, Lenovo was caught red-handed for selling laptops pre-installed with Superfish malware that opened up doors for hackers. Then, in August, Lenovo again got caught installing unwanted and non-removable malware into part of the BIOS reserved for custom drivers. Now, Lenovo has once again been caught installing spyware on its laptops and workstations without the user's permission or knowledge. The Chinese computer manufacturer is hitting the news once again for embedding tracking soft…

So, how stupid can you get... Heads-up to anyone who is using a Samsung laptop: they’re disabling Windows Updates by default to prevent “incompatibilities.” Via The Next Web: Anyone who’s purchased a new Samsung laptop has probably run into the company’s “software updater” tool, which promises to keep apps and drivers up to date on your computer. However, that software does something sinister in the background: it disables Windows Update. Which is not a good idea.

You might think that a company that has been caught installing malware once, would be extremely cautious that it wouldn't happen again. Not so Lenovo. Back in February 2015, users discovered that the Chinese based Lenovo put pre-installed dangerous, HTTPS-breaking adware called Superfish in its notebooks. At first they denied that the adware posed any threat to your privacy, but they quickly changed their tune. Check if you are infected with Superfish here. Lenovo's uninstall program can be downloaded here. Fast forward to August 2015 and news appeared that Lenovo is – again – caught because they are using a rootkit to make sure their software remains installed, even …

Hi, It's a little off topic, butI found babylon toolbar installed on my laptop recently. Don't know how it was installed, while i did not installed anything for months. Now I wan't to get rid of it and it seems like I'd have to do something more than a simple removal from the "Add/Remove program" option. It must have something to do with the registry, but I can not able to clean that. The other day someone in yahoo answers suggest a removal guide, it's Removed by Staff it requires to download an antivirus not heard before, I just want to make sure everything won't go wrong again. so does anybody knows about this product or is there a simpler way to remove this every…

A computer technician installed Lunarsoft and Avast anti-malware in place of the CA ant-malware I had on my computer. Optimum provides this free. This was a while ago, and I wonder if it's a good idea. I've always heard that you shouldn't have two ant-malware programs on your computer at the same time. I don't know why he did it; he was fixing another problem and did this at the same time.

I did a system clean-up and updated a load of programs. Following Tarun's advice, I uninstalled Comodo and installed Outpost Security Suite. It works well with pre-installed avast, auto-disabling it's own anti-virus. However, Outpost caused massive surges of CPU usage, with my CPU typically clocking in at 100%. causing frequent freezing and music being played on WMP to be played incorrectly. After having shutdown Outpost and tested everything on the PC, everything is working fine, so I have now uninstalled Outpost. Can anyone suggest other decent firewalls?

I'm looking for a 'component verifier' that works as follows. [1] Gets a list of all major *.exe and *.dll files that comprise the 'target' software device. [2] Verify the target (program, sub-system or product) on any Operating System. The 'verifier' needs to do the following (Using a Microsoft OS as an example). (A) Check each module (*.exe and/or *.dll file) of the target software device (product, sub-system, whatever) via 3 different hash functions (MD5, SHA1, etc). (B) Open a 'Device Descriptor' file that contains an XML formatted description of the target device to be verified (or use a database) © Generate a report on the verification results (in…

Is the new Avast Free/Home Edition still the recommended anti-virus? I ask as when you Compare products, Lets you safely browse suspicious websites or applications, isn't ticked; http://www.avast.com...s-download#tab3 But I thought that was the whole point of having a real-time anti-virus, that si it stops viruses getting into your system from any area. And whats the take on it having a real-time anti-spyware included? Is it good? If so, is there any need to have Windows Defender running? Whilst I'm here, am I right in saying that when installing Comodo, it should be firewall only, and no anti-virus? Then anti-virus should be Avast. I'd like to think as mentioned…

OSAM: Autorun Manager v5.0 - against rookits that hide their files! 11-Sep-2009 As mentioned before, a few weeks ago we recommenced the works on our first public product, namely OSAM: Online Solutions Autorun Manager. Releasing this, fifth, version of the product has turned hard for our company. For a number of reasons of different nature the release data had to be moved several times. However, we managed to brace up and - thanks to join efforts - finally released the new version of the product. Now, greet OSAM: Online Solutions Autorun Manager v5.0! The 5th version provides a unique possibility to detect and remove rootkits that hide their files on the hard …

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place - move the post if you see fit. OK, I don't know exactly what happened and I didn't notice anything wrong until last Saturday. I came home late, my PC was off, I fired it up and updated Avast free, Malwarebytes free, Spyware Terminator free. I ran PerfectDisk 10 on 2 partitions using Smart Placement - rebooted. I then went to amd.com and attempted to download a pdf file, when I tried to save it to my downloads folder I was presented with a warning - read-only location and the file was saved with zero bytes. I checked the folder and sure enough it was read only. I attempted to uncheck read-only in properties, applied but no lu…

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (or MSRT) is a small on-demand scanner that checks your computer for some specific infections. The little program is not at all a replacement for your regular anti-virus program but can detect and remove some very bothersome malware. The latest version of the MSRT is downloaded every second Tuesday every month to your computer via the regular Microsoft Updates but then it kind of disappears from your view. So, the question is how do you run the MSRT the simplest way possible? The solution is: Hit 'Start' Hit 'Run' Type mrt /f (just copy and paste) Story here.
