greenknight Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Who's Connected? - Reveals programs that are connected to the internet Try "netstat -b" or "netstat -bv" for verbose. Who's Connected is much handier; it's a very lightweight, free program. Oh, and I forgot, I dumped Xpy. See edit above.
Ultimate Predator Posted January 27, 2007 Author Posted January 27, 2007 I updated the list, and gave direct links to software pages.

greenknight Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Updated list again - I replaced Windows Defender with SpywareTerminator. Also, I noticed I'd forgotten to list A-squared Free, which I've had all along.
greenknight Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Updated list again - deleted Spyware Terminator, added Arovax Shield. Spyware Terminator was too annoying, and its settings reset themselves.

Eldmannen Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 It is funny how people have a huge list of security software they run. I have none. I run the built-in Windows firewall that came with Windows XP SP2.

I run the built-in Windows firewall that came with Windows XP SP2. That firewall is rubbish. Though my list of security software is pretty small. Yeah, I agree. It is a simple firewall, with almost no options. More like a toy than a tool. I am not sure other personal firewalls for Windows have much more to offer though.
greenknight Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Actually, the XP firewall is pretty effective at blocking incoming traffic. It does nothing about outgoing traffic, though - which means that any trojan that does manage to install itself can install more malware unimpeded. I have to deal with other users on this machine - and I've been outvoted about installing a real firewall. Thus I keep a lot of tools on hand, just in case. The one time a trojan did get installed, I was barely able to download the tools I needed clean everything out - so I just keep them on hand and updated, so I'm ready if it happens again. I don't routinely run all that stuff.

greenknight Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 I realized, belatedly, that I'd left out a whole category of tools; so I added Autoruns, Process Explorer, and Process Monitor, under the new heading "Diagnostics".
