Ultimate Predator Posted August 15, 2006 Author Posted August 15, 2006 My slightly newer list 9including non-security stuff), not that much though, recommended to everyone: Antivirus: eTrust EZ Antivirus - FREE ONE YEAR TRIAL Powerful antivirus that uses very little ram, but is still highly efficient. http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ Firewall: ZoneAlarm Pro/Free - PAY FOR/FREE Sorts out many things automatically for you, and is much more configurative than other firewalls. I prefer the Pro version, it has more features, but you can get the FREE version, which is still the best free firewall around. ZoneAlarm Pro: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata...amp;lid=nav_pro ZoneAlarm FREE: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/comp...=GB&lang=en On-Demand Anti-Spyware: Spybot - Search & Destroy - FREE One of the boldest and best Anti-Spyware programs around, comes with many useful tools, and has a unique system of scanning for bots. http://www.spybot.info Ad-Aware SE Personal - FREE Very good, sometimes lists things other things don't, simple inter-face. http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download Spyware Blaster - FREE Stop spyware and adware from being downloaded in the first place, but it isn't real-time, it just blocks certain sites which are known to contain spyware/adware. Just be sure to keep it up dated and to always click block all know issues after updating. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Disk Cleaners: CCleaner - FREE This is by far the best cleaning program around, I used to use it a lot myself, but the issues scanner can cause major problems if it deletes the wrong thing (as do all Registry Cleaners), so use the cleaner, and that alone. http://www.ccleaner.com Disk Defragmenter - Included in Windows Keeps your PC running smoothly, run once a month. Unzipper/Compresser: PowerArchiver - PAY FOR PowerArchiver 2006 offers hundreds of features, yet remains easy to use, small and fast. Novice users will find a familiar interface complete with tutorial and detailed help, while more experienced users can take advantage of full Explorer integration, multiple encryption methods and advanced compression algorithms. http://www.powerarchiver.com/ Office Suites: Open Office - FREE Like Microsoft Office (it will open up Microsoft Office files as well, as well as many other Office Suite types), but free, and with some better features! http://www.openoffice.org Codecs: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - FREE Brillaint program, replaces Quicktime, Real, DivX ect, which are very bloated programs, and also has loads of other codecs as well - allows you basically to watch any video file, including DVDs! http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite..._Codec_Pack.htm PDF Readers: Foxit Reader - FREE Far better than Adobes PDF reader, no installation required, tiny application (not even a program its so small) but just as good (if not better) than Adobe's PDF Reader feature wise. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php P2P Applications uTorrent - FREE Best P2P ever, no installation required, tells you what type of files you are downloading, so if you're careful you can always avoid viruses. To understand how it works read "A beginner's guide to BitTorrent" under Guides on the site below: http://www.utorrent.com/ Miscellaneous Applications/Files: Tweak UI - FREE "This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer settings, taskbar settings, and more." http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx Unlocker - FREE Read the site to understand - well worth having for techs! http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ Tweak Guides - Tweaking Companion PDF file - FREE Contains tweaks for both optimum peformance and appearance for your PC. Well worth getting and going through. http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html PC Appearance Applications: XPize - FREE Replaces old icons that Microsoft have overlooked, and makes the appearance far better, just be careful when installing the extras, I personally only have the Custom Icons, Royale VS and Cursors ticked under Extras. Oherwise, leave everything under Files, and UXTheme Patch ticked. http://xpero.msfn.org/ Wallpapers/Themes (FREE): http://www.joejoe.biz http://www.socksoff.co.uk/ In reference to other popular programs, and why I haven't listed them: Firefox - a very good browser, the best alternative to IE, but I found that there were too many pages that weren't displaying properly in it, and all the great features that Firefox has will be released in the new IE7 anyway this winter. TuneUp Utilites - same reasons as CCleaner on the registry cleaner, but the other utilites are great, though Tweak UI (above) replaces many of its features. Ewido - adds a service to your PC which I find very annoying, and having too many anti-spyware programs can cause major conflictions 9a recurring problem that I had in the past), which is why I only recommend the two scanners above and SpywareBlaster.
Administrator Tarun Posted October 2, 2006 Administrator Posted October 2, 2006 Updated list: Anti-Virus: Avast 4.7 with all updates. Firewall: Outpost Professional 4 - all plugins disabled except Attack Detection. Experimenting currently with what I need and what I don't need. (Task manager reports current Mem Usage of 4,500k. This is not an accurate reflection of how much RAM or system resources it takes up.) Malware Prevention: SpywareBlaster - fully updated. CWShredder 2.19 Ad-Aware 1.06 - all updates. Spybot 1.4 - all updates and Immunization applied. ewido 4 - rarely used. Other assorted tools I use to clean computers at work. Extra tools: Process Explorer - beats Task Manager any day. Autoruns - better management than msconfig. Zip Management: 7-zip - covers every type of compressed archive out there.

New_Age Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Nice list. I too use Utorrent. For downloading music which really isn't consider illagel yet.
Administrator Tarun Posted October 2, 2006 Administrator Posted October 2, 2006 I gave up on eTrust back when they started to miss viruses with the latest defs. Even really old viruses. My key issue with ZoneAlarm (including Pro) was that it would often have issues blocking things, even not blocking the right items. Reporting things as malicious and doing nothing about it, and the infamous resource issues. Sucking up a lot of resources to do things a basic freeware firewall can cover with ease. My gripe with Windows defrag is that it's a very old version of Diskeeper Lite (Freeware) that Microsoft licensed for use. You can however get a free version of Diskeeper Lite from the Intel website. Go here: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/software/idu/ Download: "Full Version - Intel Desktop Utilities v2.1.9.66 [EXE 88.9 MB]" Unzip the File. Navigate your way here: IDU_2.1.9.66\3rdparty\Diskeeper Install and enjoy. :D
Haze Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Hey tarun. What overall firewall, AV setup would you recommend to be the best (can be paid for software/hardware/freeware, anything.)

Ultimate Predator Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 I gave up on eTrust back when they started to miss viruses with the latest defs. Even really old viruses.I have nver noticed this problem. Thing is the only other decent AV is Avast, but that has caused lots of problems on PC's I have installed it on, so I don't use it. It always blocks things perfectly, no problem whatsoever. Malicious? Are you talking about the anti-spyware? I rarely use it, but it always seems to work whenever I have used it. I'll look into that. I just don't want more services/startups being added to my system.
