The email client on my laptop is Windows Live 2012. My ISP is Comcast. Quite often, emails download from the Comcast server TWICE. I.e., I get a long litany of duplicate emails. Why?

I've used Auslogics Disk Defrag (ADD) for several years. I was initially attracted to it because of its speed vs. Windows Pass 1, Pass 2, Pass 3, . . . ad infinitum. . . takes forever. However, ADD's behavior concerns me/makes me think it might be at least partially a scam. Here are the reasons I think it might be: First run: ADD finds and deletes (example) 13,000 temp files and finds 300 fragmented files, which it defrags. IMMEDIATELY after that run, I run it again. It finds and deletes 400 temp files and defrags 37 fragmented files. Mind you, this is after I HAVE DONE NOTHING ON THE COMPUTER following the ADD run!!! I can repeat this multiple times, an…

Wife has a VERY old (2003) Compaq Presario laptop running Win XP! Today the sound stopped working and the default volume icon in the notifications area disappeared, despite being set to "Always display". Device Manager shows the dreaded '!' in a round yellow sign indicating that it's not working. It uses the Realtek AC97 driver, so I tried (a) downloading/installing the AC97 driver; (b) uninstalling the Device Manager entry and downloading and installing the driver again. Neither worked; Device Mgr. still shows it as not working. My reaction to this is that the sound card is dead. Before I declare it as such, does anyone have any suggestions for things to try to re…

  6. Over the past few days I've been messing with my home server and trying different Linux distros. I've gone from: Ubuntu > Xubuntu > Arch (trying to set it up but realizing I'm not ready for it yet) > Xubuntu > Manjaro So far, Manjaro XFCE has been to my liking. Fewer issues and things have been much easier to set up on that old machine. Just a shame the hardware is so old. P4 3.4GHz, 3GB RAM, and recently had to downgrade the PSU and graphics card (128MB card because the one before - a 512MB - had the fan go bad and make a lot of noise despite trying to fix it) in order to have a working, silent server PC once more.

  8. For some time I was a strong advocate for Adblock Plus. The recent information about how they'll be setting the stage for better advertising seemed a bit strange to me. The story was about how Adblock Plus now sells ads. There's nothing really wrong with Adblock Plus doing this, they still honor their "Allow unobtrusive advertising" option and from what I've read it will work with how they will be selling ads. Since the news of Adblock Plus selling ads, I've made the switch to uBlock Origin. I figured I'd give it a try. I liked how well Adblock Plus worked and that it just worked. It removed elements and hide them very well. I tried uBlock Origin last year and it had…

  9. https://testpilot.firefox.com Install the Test Pilot addon and you can get access to cool new features in development. One of the interesting ones they have as of this post is Min Vid. It allows you to pop out a YouTube video (or some others) and have it on top of your browser. Really cool feature if you like listening to music on YouTube and want to easily repeat a song.

Suppose you are being stalked by a former lover or simply get emails via Gmail that cannot be thwarted via 'Reporting Spam' (the button with the exclamation mark). The question is therefore: how do you get your peace of mind back without reporting the sender to the police. The answer is easy. If you're viewing your mail on a computer: 1. Open the email 2. At the top right of the email, click the down arrow 3. Click Block [sender] If you blocked someone by mistake, you can unblock them using the same steps. If you're viewing your mail on an Android phone or tablet go here for a solution.

  12. It looks like Firefox 64-bit may have launched to the stable channels. I was poking around earlier when I saw 42.0 b1 x64 had landed. I checked for a stable build and when I added 64 after win, I got a successful download. https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-42.0-SSL&os=win64&lang=en-US It sure looks like a stable build, is this official? I hope so!

I downloaded the newest version of Java and on the website it said to remove older versions of Java. I have the newest version Java 7 Update 7 and what I had previously, Java 6 Update 23 (64-bit). Should I remove the Java TM 6 version? PC is working fine.

  14. Basically, Firefox will have a major bug fixed after many years where the style sheets are loaded in a much better method. Source: https://blog.mozilla.org/nnethercote/2015/07/01/firefox-41-will-use-less-memory-when-running-adblock-plus/

Recently I got a bit tired of foobar2000 and went looking around to see if there was something a bit more intuitive to meet my needs. I came across MusicBee and have been trying it for a bit. So far, I'm liking it. It can download album art and do quite a lot of things with no real need from the end user. http://getmusicbee.com/

  16. This is for Firefox 7.0 and up. The 'http://' URL prefix is now hidden by default. Want to keep it visible? Do this: about:config in the address bar Search for: browser.urlbar.trimURLs Change the value from True to False and restart Firefox. This really should be an option in the options dialog.

It seems some time in the past week, maybe since Friday, ABP stopped working using Google Chrome. It no longer blocks those ads in videos, nor even regular ads that appear on webpages. In fact, you can select to block something, but it doesn't let you click the option to add the rule. I found plenty of search results of ABP not working in Chrome, going back years, and I'm not sure if it is related or not. Has anyone else had this problem recently or before?

  19. Usually, Internet Explorer opens to my designated Home Page. And when I open a New Tab it opens a "blank" page. This morning I found a program called BuzzSearch had installed itself on my system, and Internet Explorer was opening to their home page. I uninstalled BuzzSearch and reinstated my Home Page. Everything seemed fine. However, now when I am on my Home Page and open a New Tab, it also opens my home page instead of a blank page. i don't know if BuzzSearch had anything to do with it. I would like to get back to the way it was before, with New Tabs opening to blank pages. Any suggestions?

You can now use an EXE installer to install Puppy Linux in a Windows PC. Just download the EXE of the Puppy version you want and click on it; the installer will add (1) Linux to your Windows boot dialogue and (2) Grub menu for choosing how to use Puppy Linux. Also, two directories will be added to your hard drive: a "boot" directory containing the boot scripts, plus a "puppy" folder containing the Puppy Linux files. Dual booting was never this simple! 23. Windows XP has a problem with trying to open too many TCP/IP connections at the same time. The driver file (tcpip.sys) has a hard-coded limit of 10 attempts built-in and there is no Registry key or value that can over-ride it. It was introduced in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and is present in all later versions of Windows right up to (but not including) Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows 7. When the limit is reached, Windows generates an error event in the Event log, Event ID 4226. I know of two programs that can overcome this limit. Both of them have been around for several years now:- 4226 fix by LvlLord (latest version is EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip) TCP-Z by deepxw (la…

  25. Does anyone know any software which silently uninstalls junk software? You always have to help friends with their s*** computers, and even if they just bought it, its already preloaded with a s*** ton of junk. It can take hours to manually uninstall the junk (if even possible), with having to find it, determine if its junk, then manually confirm the uninstall one-by-one by clicking next, next, next. A very boring, tedious process. It should automatically and silently uninstall all toolbars, software of poor reputation, and commonly bundled useless junk.
