The version of Windows Messenger available on Windows Update is version 4.7. But the latest version of Windows Messenger is version 5.1, I wonder why 5.1 is not available on Windows Update, only old 4.7. Yeah, this is a dumb thread. :D

Hey, I was wondering what frontpage CMS do YOU like best. I've seen the CMS from IPB (getting pretty nice if you ask me), VirtuaNews (outdated but until now still the best i've seen, easy to use etc), Joomla (not so friendly to use), MKportal (lack of options). So now i wonder if there is anything that might be interesting to test. Let me know AccessIT

GIMP is a free, open source, cross-platform graphics editor. Version 2.4 was released in October 24. The old version was 2.2.17. The new version 2.4 comes with lots of new stuff. * http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/ I think the new 2.4 version somehow feels nicer than the old 2.2 versions...

Anyone tried the new CCleaner 2.0 ? It just got released as final version, after having been available as beta and release candidate. It is a complete rewrite. Lots of its shortcomings seems now to have been fixed, from having been coded in Visual Basic, it has been ported to C++. It is now portable, has 64-compatibility and no longer have external dependencies. Anyone know if it still lacks UTF-8 support? Anyone know if it still is bundled with that annoying Yahoo! toolbar junk?

Preferably open-source, though if there is no such thing, then at least freeware. Cheers.

Just got my new laptop today, currently running all my old software fine, and using Avast as my anti-virus. However; whats a good firewall to use (currently its default windows firewall)? I need a good undelete software for Vista? Equivalent to TweakUI? Equivalent to SpywareBlaster? Should I bother with Windows Defender? Does AdAware (1.06) work with vista? Also, does anyone know how to remove the security center icons off certain icons Cheers.

AutoPlay just doesn't work. For anything. Not one thing. I've got all the settings sorted with Tweak UI, its all enabled, it says so in Tweak UI and in all the properties. But it just doesn't work. Suggestions? My DVD Drive has been a major pain in the a** recently. It is meant to be able to copy. However, most programs recognise it, but don't recognise that it has a blank CD/DVD in there. I have tried all the programs in the Free Software List in the wiki. The only programs that do pick it up are listed here under CD/DVD. It does pick up audio CD's (not autoplay of course), but if I go to WMP it plays it. DVD's it doesn't pick up. If its in the drive, a number o…

Found an article on Windows Secrets via Digg. http://www.windowssecrets.com/2007/09/13/0...t-users-consent Interesting article. If true, it sucks, I hate when stuff gets installed/updated without my explicit permission. Edit: Seems to be confirmed. http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...urce=rss_news10 http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=774 http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=779

I read an interesting article that I found via Digg. http://successfulsoftware.net/2007/08/16/t...re-awards-scam/ Many software download sites give 5-star awards to ALL software on the site, to make the authors of the software put the awards on their sites, and link back to the download site so they can get more popular and climb in ranking. These "5-star awards", "Editors Pick" and such awards often don't mean anything at all, they have no weigh, they're awarded to all software.

What is everyone's thoughts on having this kind of list? I know we have one currently and I could convert it to a wiki. I'd like to hear if it's needed or not and why of course. :hello:

While many supposed tweaks to speed up Firefox are useless, or do more harm than good, I've come across some official optional prefs you can use to fine-tune the timing of page rendering. They can be very helpful on slower connections. These can be added in the Configuration Console (they're not there by default): enter about:config in the Location Bar, right-click anywhere on the page, select New > Integer (for the first two), enter the pref name and then the value. You can change the value later by right-clicking the pref and selecting Modify. Firstly, there's nglayout.initialpaint.delay: The default is 250 (that's milliseconds). It originally was higher …

This was posted on the Mozillazine Firefox forum, guy put together some code that changes the way Firefox (or Flock) gets Web content: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=560802 This does seem to really increase the speed of Firefox rendering Web pages. Thought some of the power users here might like to check it out; I wouldn't be surprised if this code gets incorporated into future versions of Firefox. That is, unless there's some problem with it that's not readily apparent... <edit> Changed the topic heading to reflect the fact that it doesn't really work. <end edit>
