JavaRa is a simple tool that does a simple job: it removes old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). And it removes some log files and temporary files that JRE leaves behind. Java software in general and the Java JRE in particular allow you to run applications called ‘applets’ that are written in the Java programming language. You probably have Java JRE installed on your computer because these applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, view images in 3D, as well as many others. As with all software, the JRE is updated on a regular basis. Updates are necessary to add new funct…

  6. Hi, Just wondering, is there an open-source firewall available for Windows? Or open-source anti-spyware? So d*** annoying everything for Windows concerning security seems to be proprietary.al I've also decided to uninstall avast and got for ClamWin, I hardly ever download questionable files anymore, and when I do I'll just use ClamWin. Still, I assume its wise to keep on running a firewall? Also, in terms of anti-spyware/malware, I only have Spybot and SpywareBlaster. Do they suffice for a regular user who hardly downloads any questionable files?

Found this while browsing MajorGeeks list of antivirus apps. It's from an outfit called runtimeware, and it's not an AV program per se. It sound interesting, but I couldn't find a lot of opinions about it; it doesn't seem to be widely used. I found a few who liked it a lot, none who had anything bad to say about it. It sounds like it could be a useful security enhancement, or a waste of time and resources. Anybody know anything about it?

  10. How is Mac any worse than Windows? This question comes from this topic.

  11. Ah yes, of course. Had trouble understanding how to install ubuntu on a seperate partition I had already made, and without a backup of my data, or a Windows installation DVD, I was worried and didn't do it in the end. One day I will though. Or, I'll install Xubuntu just for awesome performance. Do you think it better? Is gobuntu feasible to use? What is the advantage of Kubuntu?

Really Slick Screensavers are a bunch of cool screensavers. They're used in Ubuntu, but also available for Windows. I use the SkyRocket screensaver myself, and I love it. It is really cool. I think it is the best one. I watch it enchanted like a little kid. Download You might need OpenAL for some screensaves, if you don't already have it installed.

The as****** at Adobe are adding DRM to Flash. http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/02/adobe-pushes-drm-flash It is illegal to circumvent DRM by in the US through the evil DMCA law, Europe have similar laws. This mean that it will be impossible to use third-party SWF (Flash) players, such as Gnash, Swfdec, etc. It will also mean that people cant exercise their fair-use rights of mixing and parody by downloading flash videos, mixing them, and uploading them. Something that has been very popular on video-sharing sites such as YouTube. So now Adobe are removing fair-use, mixing, parody, fun, and locking out the competition. They do have some greedy motivation to …

I couldn't find what I was looking for in the wiki... I don't want to tell people I know to use so much software and go through so many steps. What is the single best solution, even though it may not be 100% complete?

There's no longer image hosting at eazyshare.com, the domain has been purchased by a "stock control" site - as in stock market. That link should be deleted. One to add: Secunia Software Inspector - http://secunia.com/software_inspector/?task=load It detects insecure versions of about 40 common apps. Even if you've updated, it may find old, insecure versions of software still lurking on your machine - I had 3 old Flash versions that updating had not removed, as well as media player security updates I needed. Handy site.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). It's pretty nice, it comes with lots of useful software. I hear there are over 20.000 packages in the software repository. It comes with all the usual, web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger client, media player, calculator, games, etc. Also comes with a compiler, dictionary, and a nifty note-taking application. The calendar integrates with Evolution Mail, so you can make appointments in the calendar. The SkyRocket screensaver is sweet, its fireworks. It also comes with a complete office suite (OpenOffice). I liked that it comes with a text editor that supports syntax highlighting, and software for viewing PDF docume…
