I have tried using regseeker but couldn't really get to grips with it. I deleted the green entries but still have about 500 red entries listed. Don't feel brave enough to go any futher with it. Any suggestions (easy ones! )

When I tested my XP firewall at Shields Up!, it just barely failed. One port, port 1025, responded to a solicited request (one of the 3 ways they ping them). It said that an unidentified DCOM service might be opening the port. I thought I could disable DCOM or whatever was responsible, and fix it, but no luck. While fiddling around with it I did stumble onto a way to close that port, though. If I use xpy to disable the Firewall/Connection Sharing service, then re-enable the firewall (very quick to do, a warning balloon pops up, you click on it, 2 more clicks and it's done), all ports are completely stealthed, it will pass any test. This has to be done again eve…

So, now they're charging shipping for the XP SP2 disk……bummer. It was free. BTW, for the really severe tech heads, the disk includes a butt-load of support tools for XP Pro that are not in the downloadable version of SP2.

I get a blue screen sometimes right at windows startup and I have to restart. Once the computer is started and it gets through start up I rarely see the blue screen again. On the Blue screen it mentions a file sr.sys. The screen also mentions that I may be having trouble with a device driver. I was wondering what this file was and if I am supposed to update a particular driver. Thanks

My sister-in-law has just got a brand new computer, ( her very old one packed in suddenly) and will be getting her broadband connected in about a week. I have got a usb thumb drive with various up-to-date setups on for virus and malware. She wants Avg, and ad-aware on although I'm trying to talk her round to e-trust. My questions are, 1. Is there a recommended order for putting things on and updating for that first time connection to internet? 2. If I can talk her round to e-trust, is there a way I can get the key for her as she has no e-mail setup yet.? 3.Can I use that autoupdater to put all windows updates on?

Are all windows updates kept in one folder and if so where? I ask in case it is a worthwhile exercise to make a copy of them in case of having to do a reinstall or similar.

i want to make a back up of my system but i have never done it before. where do i start?

  17. Started by hazelnut,

This question is prompted by something DJLizard said about restart. If I change something, and it is suggested that I restart my pc... and I don't. Does this mean that the change I clicked to apply does not get activated at all? Or does it mean it won't be activated until I restart?

  18. Started by Monkey Proof,

While browsing through regedit I noticed a bunch of stuff that I previously had uninstalled. My question is it safe to delete what’s left provided I make a restore point in case anything goes wrong? I found a few things that I don’t like in my registry. Like under yahoo messenger, I found 3 user names that I never saved to my buddy list. Also found myfunweb under yahoo. Also in yahoo search there were some search items that have not been deleted by ccleaner. Can I go and delete those also? Obviously I have no experience working with the registry files and I know playing with the registry files can be fatal to the os. So any help will be appreciated

I know this is really easy, but I can't remember how it happens anymore. Dad has lost his SHOW desktop icon on his toolbar at the bottom of the desktop. How do we get that back? Before for some reason he had a doc that said header and one doc that said desktop, not sure where they came from. I had him dump those in the trash and now I just need the quick launch for the "show desktop" please. Thanks :realmad:

Tarun? You use this, so please tell me.....when it does ask for rules then how do I know which rules to click on? I mean, is there a way that I can check on google or somewhere to find out what it's asking and then figure it out. Like had UPD or something and I had no idea whether I wanted that to even be on here. Did I totally confuse you, or do you know what I'm asking? I'm sorry the page isn't up right now and usually there is no one on when I get these things. Thanks Ooops, well I put the REPLY somewhere, it's lost in cyberspace, but, yes, sorry, that's the program, Outpost. I downloaded them both the same day, so I got confused. Anyway, like in the a…

Got this pop up after everything froze on my computer. I mean everything, had to Hard boot. Was in the middle of running Lavasoft and after the boot then this popped up "Spooler SubSystem App" Requesting an outgoing connection with Remote Service UDP:38184 Remote Address 172.16.255.255 (this is NOT my ISP but see it all the time) Spooler is usually something to do with the printer right? and I think the ISP is my internet but not the one they gave me for my computer. *eyes rolling in the back of my head* this is the first time I've seen this one, what should I do? BTW this is on "outpost" and wants me to allow all activities, Stop all activities or C…

When I put in a music cd, one of the choices I am offered to play it with is Magix media manager. This is something I downloaded, tried and uninstalled straight away. A run-search revels nothing with Magix, even in hidden folders. How do I get rid of this option to use it?
