Hello to all and I hope that you can be of help to me. For the past couple of weeks I have been receiving error messages on executables that I download manually such as any Windows Updates, Visual Basic, Windows Installer, actually anything to do with Microsoft updates/patches/hotfixes and the like including a couple of other general programs. The error messages are as follows and I was able to download everything just fine until just out of the blue I started to receive either one or both of the error messages: "Extraction Failed. Cannot Find Window Class" "The installation program appears to be damaged or corrupted. Contact the vendor of this application." T…

No little green progress bars showup while waiting to check for windows update. Tried Dial-a-fix (V0.60.0.24) to no avail. Had a simular problem sometime back, which I beieve was corrected (indirectly) because of a malware/virus problem I was having. This after I sent a high-jack this report to someone. I did a xp,sp2 reinstall (repair/not a clean install) and after that when I checked for updates there were 82 that needed to be downloaded & installed, which I did. However, there still was no green progress bars this time either. Using Win XP home withSP2, IE-7. Any help greatly appreciated. dhac

If you use "Windows Update", and click on the "Custom" button, then choose "Software, Optional", there is now since quite recently a new option there. It is "Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP (KB917013)", anyone noticed that? Thought, I would give a heads up, so people are aware of it. Is it something backported from Vista? I don't think I will install it... anyone tried it?

 Hi, I'm new here, but not new to fixing computer problems. But this thing has me stumped. After extensive internet searching, a whole (24 hours) day of trying to get my computer functioning normally, no progress. I use Windows XP SP2 and was uninstalling old ATi Catalyst drivers (7.9, the latest) and installing 7.7's (per AMD customer support's directions from an actual agent) which pertained to a whole 'nother issue. But now, now... my god. My services aren't starting, about 95% of them are stopped. What the?! I go to services from the control panel and a big, static gray box is there instead of anything else. I go to the second tab and try to start a service …

I've spent 24 hours fighting a losing battle with my disk drives on a Dell Dimension 4500, Windows XP SP2, (see below for system details). This started when I decided it was time to make some more backups of my family photos and other data files. So I tried to copy directly to a CD-R which I have done before using Adaptec's software now updated to Roxio V.5. Firstly, the old files could only be read on one CD drive (Samsung) and later none of them could be read. I checked the drives using Device Manager which told me that they were faulty, so I followed the procedure to uninstall the drivers and checked that Windows no longer listed them on my computer. I …

This great forum helped me totally solve my problem on my computer - that I thought I could get some input on our other computer. We just loaded IE7 from IE6. It then said we need to load some updates. There were - I think 5 The first 3 ran fine and the last 2 did not. several times after restarting it asked to reload IE7 I did nad then again it wanted the updates. Again the 3 ran fine - 2 will not load Not sure where to start on this one I am not sure if there is a way to safely remove IE7 and start again??? Or even if that is the right approach Thanks

I am using Windows XP Professional (English) with SP2. I have a little problem, its just a minor inconvenience. If I have a folder open, then I shut down the computer, the next time I start the computer, the folder that was open is now not open anymore, so to get back to what I was doing, I have to click on My Computer, and browse to it, and open it again. Maybe the desktop environment forgets about my desktop session? Anyone know how to rectify this inconvenience?

I have just got a brand new Dell 9200 I have installed all of my old software packages and a new broadband isp and everything seemed to be fine. BUT. When I try to pick up my emails from the new isp using Outlook Express, it keeps prompting for the user name and password, ad infinitum, until I click cancel and it gives me the errors 0x800CCC90 and 0x800CCC92, saying it does not like the user name or password, but it will let me send email. After several days of trial and error, I have discovered that my new isp has changed the information that makes up the user name, but didn't bother to mention it when I checked with their support team. Their idea now of a user name i…

I have two folders, originally form the start menu which I tried to delete after moving their content to a different location on the start menu. Whenever I try to delete them, an error box appears saying; Cannot Delete (name of folder): The directory is not empty. They are empty. What can I do (I hate tried Unlocker, it says No Locking Handle found, I hit delete, says object was deleted, and its still there)?

I have a copy of XP PR0 from 2002, doesn't have SP2. I put it on and it broke some of my programs so I removed it. I just tried to install to a new motherboard and it get so far and give me an error. I bought a new copy with SP2 and it installed fine so concluded that the mobo won't accept anything but SP2. When did this start? Last computer I put together was in 2004 and had no problem.

Hi, When I Installed Windows Xp Professional I did a type-o and now I can't seem to rename the Folder Within in C:\Documents and Settings. I tried under Safe mode and it DID rename it but when I booted up... Windows went back to its default state (And what I mean by that is it change the visual back to Luna, it changed my start button settings back to default and the background) and it created a second folder under C:\Documents and Settings. When I went to the second folder that was created Windows transfered all the files within the first folder to the 2nd folder. How can I go with deleting the 2nd folder? I've already transfered all the files back to the first fo…
