Windows 2003 Server (NT 5.2) is newer than Windows XP (NT 5.1). Windows 2003 Server while meant to be run on a server, can be configured to work like a desktop OS via following guides available on the Internet. So how does Windows 2003 Server compare against Windows XP Professional? Which is better as a desktop OS?

For some reason I have both version 2.0 and 3.0 of Microsoft .NET Framework installed. Are both really needed to be installed or could you uninstall 2.0 and keep just 3.0 ? 2.0 is 92 mb. 3.0 is 59 mb.

I have an motherboard with a VIA KT133 chipset. Today, on Windows Update, I saw there was an optional update device driver titled "VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel" in the Hardware section. I checked the checkbox, and clicked on the "Install Updates" button. Then it asked me to restart the computer, and when I did, Windows wouldn't boot up, because it would halt by an blue screen. Safe mode didn't work either. But it got fixed by choosing "Use the last good configuration" entry from the menu.

I recently hooked up our old scanner, i believe it was a very nice one back in the day, but now theyve put its drivers and such in the archives. So, the problem is i got it working and everything, and as an experiment set it up on the highest resolution and scaned a standard picture. when i try to open the picture in mspaint, i get an error "There is not enough memory or resources to complete operation. Close some programs, and then try again". Honestly, this is rediculous. You guys know me well enough that my computer is as clean as i can get it and no extra processes are running. When i open the picture in the GIMP, it actually opens, but then my computer slows to an al…

Running WinXP Pro for quite some time. Lately when it starts up (after desktop loads) I have a box come up right in the middle of the desktop, that saye "insert disk in A drive" with options to retry, cancel etc. If I cancel or close the box, it goes away. Sometimes I have to close it twice. Also a MS box comed up that says "install" and at first it would just stay there for approx. 45-50 seconds and the blink a couple of times. I think it was Diskeeper and so I deleted Diskeeper and now it comes on for approx. 10-12 seconds (blinking fast) then goes away. Anybody got any ideas. I have run all kinds of reg repair programs and defragers, but still there. Thanks fo…

I really hope that someone can help me. When I put in my Windows XP CD, I get the following message. Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows. What am I supposed to do now? My CD is only 3 months old. How can it already be corrupted or not compatible with Windows?

Hey all! My computer is being funky, and it's clean so I'm out of ideas. When you go to sercvices.msc you can configure your services to start any way that you want, right? Well...my computer changed it's mind about that recently. The settings are changing at reboot. Example: I set "Remote Registry" to disabled. I reboot, and it is set to "Automatic" and it is started. It's really annoying, and is making me nervous. I am the Administrator of the computer. Andy ideas? Thanks! K

So, me being the tinker i am managed to screw up our main computer in the house. When booted up, it says with an error message (before even the logon screen) Error - Can not load services.exe. Missing DLL msvcp60.dll. Reinstalling or blah blah might fix the issue. I cant run DAF because it doesnt even get to the desktop. I tried safe mode and it doesnt work. I guess im going to reformat, but i cant figure out how to do it on the partition. I have a Dell 8400. I cant figure it out at all. I manage to get to a diffrent BIOS screen than the preferences one (i hit F12) but ive tried every option there, and i cant figure it out. Any help? )corjello(

Hey everyone... I'm an old school Win2ker, and a buddy just got a free *legit* copy of WinXP... I've tried WinXP on our family laptop, and although it helps to be current with all the new application, the id***-prooof design drove me absolutely insane (especially that stupid control panel!) Any tips, apps, extensions, themes, etc. to help me get used to the not-so-new world of WinXP?

Hey y'all, So Microsoft has been trying to fix errors that are appearing in Event Viewer. Today they emailed me with a new solution. GPedit.msc - Local Computer Policy - Computer Config - Windows Setting - Security Settings - Local Policies - Security Options DCOM: Machine Access Restrictions - Anonymous Logon - Local Access (enabled) Everyone - Local Access (enabled) - Remote access (enabled) First of all I didn't have choices between Anonymous/Everyone. I typed something wrong, and my computer kinda works now. It won't let me change the settings again to type the correct information. System Restore won't open. I can only navigate through Task Manager…

Well, i was doing my usual Hosts.txt file update. And when i ended up doing this. My computer went crazy, wouldnt load anything at all. So i had to go to Run>>cmd>> and use DEL command to delete the hosts.txt file. It was a pain. Lucky i was able to fix it. So for those using the Hosts.txt file, I would FULLY recommend it. But if it works for you then dont load too many lines in it. Mine became over 1mb. :)
